1978 Honda Civic 1200

PostPosted: Thu Apr 29, 2010 5:57 pm    Post subject: non cvcc water pumps Reply with quote

I called to get one today and the parts dudes asked if I needed one with 1 & 7/8" between mounting holes, 2 & 5/16" between holes, or one with 5 & 9/16" between holes.

How am I supposed to know? arent they all the same for a '78 1200 non cvcc?

thx for the help!

As far as I know the 1200s all use the same water pump. At least in the US they do. Can you order it by the Honda part number?
If so, ask them for 19110-634-405

There were at least 3 different versions of the (OEM) 1200 water pump over the years.

The first had a fixed pulley - which meant you had to remove the whole water pump just to change the cam belt. PITA

The second had a removable pulley (held on by 3 x 6mm bolts) with a 'smallish" (technical term!) PCD.

The third (still with a removable pulley) went to larger bearings and a larger shaft and had a correspondingly larger boss with a bigger PDC for the 3 attaching bolts for the pulley.

The overall diameter of the pulley didn't change - just the size of the centre hole and the PCD of the attaching bolts.

These are probably the 1-7/8" and 2-15/16" measurements the parts guy is referring to (although I've never actually bothered to measure them myself.)

Where the 5-9/16" dimension comes from I have no idea. This is approaching the actual diameter of the pulley itself (don't have one handy to check)

If he is supplying a water pump complete with pulley (and many of them seem to come this way) then it shouldn't matter.

Starting from the OEM part number is a good idea - at least that way if it doesn't fit you are well within your rights to return it.

One thing to be very firm on is that the 1200 water pump is NOT the same as the 1500/CVCC one. The 1500/CVCC pumps have a deeper impellor and will not fit on a 1200 (EB/EN) series block.

...and the 1200 is just the '1200' there was never a 1200CVCC so no need to qualify it as 'non-CVCC' as it's just a 1200CC 1200 engine Laughing

yes, thx Steph.

So, I talked to the parts guy today, the last measurement IS the pulley spec.

So I have 2 options.
We cross referenced with the OEM number that hondacarcare1 provided and it comes up with BOTH pumps.

so, I am just gonna get it rebuilt again I think. Crying or Very sad

Are they visually different? Are you at the point where you can compare the new part when it arrives? If so, order both from a supplier who allows returns, and return the one that is not correct. I do that all the time when there are multiple parts that 'might' fit
