Best way to retro fit 78 bumpers onto a 74 ?

Both front and back?

There are no 74's alive in my area, and all that's left are the older years of the first generation. I've found a few cars with perfect bumpers (and bodies for that fact) that I'd like to mount onto my 74. Clearly the 78 design is superior, plus I'd like to bring the bumber in closer by drilling out the cylinder, and removing the oil (or is it gas?).

Anybody out there done this before?

ps: find of the day. I just purchased for 8 bucks a driver and passenger side weather-stripping in almost new condition. The rubber is soft, pliable and not a tear of crack in it. Unbelievable! And mine was so hard you could sand with it.

How do you do that? What is the oil or gas?

there was a big thread on bumper swaps in the past and they talked about how to deal with the bags.I'm not shure what the thread was called, but if you search you should be able to find it.

Hope this helps!

thats one of those little things that makes a snobby civic owner..."i have a '73 and they have no rubber overriders". finding a new front one is going to be a •••••. thank god my rear one is perfect.

Tedshred....isn't that funny, you want to go with the later style bumpers and me and my friends always try to find the earlier set-up...anyways the easiest way to do the swap would be to remove the bumper assembly complete(remove 4-12mm bolts per bracket, then you remove the bumperetes and take off the 2-17mm bolts, then remove the bumper re-bar(bolts to the inside of bumper 4-12mm bolts again)this will remove the bumper from the brackets, then remove the re-bar, if you want to stay with the early bumpers..just run a bolt thru the bumper and put a nut on the backside of the mounting bracket(this will move the bumper in about 4inch's)or if you want to get later bumpers you must follow the same steps, but when it comes time to mount the bumper you must weld plates across the bumper mounts then place them back on the car and put the new bumper up against it and drill new holes...if you are looking for original '77 and older bumpers i can get a pair refinished and rechromed for around $275.00 canadian....Justin

Thanks Justin, I may just stick with the old bumpers and have a metal shop bang them out some. Your idea of mounting them to the brackets minus the rebar and rubber sounds good, but then the bumper rubs against the side fenders. I may be able to stick some kind of spacer in there to push the bumper out just slightly. Will post what I end up doing. Time to get a digital camera so I can post some pics of the project.
