Hey guys, I'm buying a 79 special-x today (apparently 1300 w/ 5 speed tranny) for $450 canadian. The only major problem is the tranny. It doesn't want to stay in 3rd gear, you have to keep the revs up and match them when changing gears. Justin (2low2go) told me it was the syncro's, but I don't know anything about transmissions. Could someone help explain to me what this all means, and how much it'd take to repair it??? I'm gonna be swapping the engine and tranny into my 1200 hondamatic, along with all the other extras, so I'll have the whole thing apart eventually. Would it be easy to fix??? Or should I look at another 5 speed tranny from a wreckers?? Need to know ASAP, as I'm buying it today. Thanks alot guys!
(by the way, when its all done I'll show pictures)

What the HELL!!! I'm getting pissed off here! It seems everytime I put up questions that I need answered, nobody leaves a single message! Come on guys! I need some advice on this tranny. Because it doesn't want to stay in 3rd gear (unless you keep the rev's high) one guy has told me its a bent shifting fork. But because you have to match the revs, it might have a problem with the syncros. PLEASE! Does anybody have a thought??

Easiest thing is to buy a used tranny...but keep the one that's with the car (for parts later).

I would go with a "proven good" used tranny. And do what John suggested, keep the old one, some junkyards will want the old one back or they will charge you for the core. You would have to pull the tranny and take the tranny apart to check the shift fork, it isn't that hard to do and it would by very obvious (visually) to see if the shift fork is bent or broken.
I bought a junkyard tranny and had it rebuilt anyway, by a professional shop, just to be safe. It's all about time and $$
BTW we would love to see some pics.

Thanks alot guys, I appreciate your advice. You two are well known on the site, and I respect you. I know of a 5-spd tranny at a wreckers thats apparently $100 canadian, so I'll go check it out.
Thanks again. And I'll develop my film once I use it up in the next 2 weeks.

Where are you in Canada???

Ya, I live in North Delta (Vancouver area) BC.
I'm happy with my deal on the special-x, $400 Canadian, and only the tranny has a problem. By the way guys, by July I'm gonna have a whole 'nother car to sell. It'll be all apart and sold in pieces, but there'll be close to a whole car there. When I'm ready to sell, I'll post pictures of what I can. Some of the things I'll probably sell include:
an average condition special-x body w/ 'special-x' decals
1200cc engine
-reconditioned stock carb
-new head gasket
-rebuilt rad fan
-new thermostat
-new cap and rotor
-new plugs and wires
-new valve-cover gasket
-new fuel pump and filter
-new exhaust and intake gaskets
-hondamatic transmission
8 stock rims w/tires
interior is rough (seat and carpets destroyed)
but the dash, steering, walls and such are good
Anyways, all you guys, if there's any parts you want, let me know soon!
