With a 2nd Gen Civic..what's the best and easiest swap to do? Would a ZC engine do well..how about the B18b1?

Well those probably will not be easy swaps but would be do-able. Give ya lots of power.

So for let's say an '83 GLS...what would the most logical swap be? See, me problem is I know too much of the 5th Gen and up models...not enough about the earlier years..

Do you want EASY or 12 second passes? Easy would be a direct bolt in. (maybe rerouting a few wires or exhaust) like a 81 accord motor...OOOOhh 90..Horses!! and 12 sec passes, well how much do you want to spend?? A guy i know was putting 88 accord block/trans witha 88 prelude head (custom intake)in the second gen civics and said it practically bolted in, with the usual swap stuff... and said he loved to see the faces of say,... Mustang owners staring in disbelief. The V-tech engines are nice but in a car that old, just too much work and money for me..

Ah...I want 12 sec. passes! I'm waiting for an answer from my garage to see if we'll be able to put a b18b1 engine in there...
what I need to find is a car! I'm waiting to see the pics from the one I'm currently looking at in BC..

Kevin, with the ZC and a 55 shot of NOS, my '79 civic wagon ran against a '98 M3 and i beat him by 4 car lengths, and the next race was a '88 mustang gt with a 5.0 and he said "he has a 80 shot of nos" but he was even easier to beat..The M3 did a best run at the track of 12.79..so i figure on the street he runs a low 13 sec..if i run more Nos i'm sure i can run a high 12 on the street..

Thanks Justin! That's the stuff I wanna hear! ZC and NOS..knowing this I now realize it's possible to get the type of setup that I want.
Tell me, how hard was it to install the ZC engine? any tips? or tricks?

Kevin, here are some hits:
I'm in the middle of a d16a6 (CRX si motor) into a '76 Civic 1200. It's a bit of work, but it will fit. There's a lot of grinding, cutting and custom fabrication involved. How does this relate to your swap? The ZC will mount up the same as my d16, but you will have a lot more room under the hood. It sounds a little scarey, but I think the best way to do it is just get the engine and the car into the garage and start cutting. Try to stick the engine in. If it doesn't fit - grind, cut and weld until it does.
Here are some questions and comments to keep in mind:
You need a high pressure fuel source from your gas tank.
A fuel return line will need to be fitted.
Is the stock radiator and fan going to clear the engine?
Don't forget about all the wiring that will need to be done. I suggest you get a Helm manual appropriate for the engine you are installing.
The good new:
I think the speedo, clutch, and throttle cables are all going to hook right up to the new engine.
If you use a crx si transmission your axles might work (this is my speculation). Justin can you verify this? Because I know Justin had to make custom axles for his...
Believe me, I'm no expert on the subject. I'm just a guy in the middle of a swap. Justin (2low2go) is the man with a lot of answers. Good luck!

I can confirm that the 1200 axles will fit into an 88-91 Si tranny.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Yes the Axles fit it, With my ZC i used the stock ZC tranny with LSD, so i had to get some custom built axles, the fuel line( original inlet line)can be used as a return line(run a new inlet line) with the CVCC platform it was possible to use original rad(with the 1200 conversions i've done)a '78 civic with a '95 vtec(1.6)..a '78 civic with the '87 crx-si(1.5) i went with VW rads with external filler necks, flex-a-lite fans, custom built engine mounts, the stock shifter ass. can be used(must cut and weld the new one, and sleeve it over original)the original cables(throttle, clutch etc) can be used..when i do the wiring i remove the factory harness, place it on the living room floor with the new donor harness and then meld the two together. It's not hard to do, but time consuming...that's about it!
Oh by the way... the convertible is now running(turbo II conversion)and DAMN is it one quick little beast!!
