Hello all,
I recently purchased a 2nd gen. civic (82 sedan) and i found this board. I was wondering if any of you know where i can get a set of lower ball joints for my control arms(or steering knuckle?). the auto stores in my area will only sell the ball joint with the lower control arm, and that is 100$ a pop. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanx.

Dennis

Dennis I experienced the same thing. What I found was the only way to replace them was to buy the whole control arm. Are the joints themselves bad or just the boot seals. The boot seals are available through Honda. They don't come cheap though, $13 a piece. Majesty Honda has them online for $8. You can find them at http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/
Hope this helps.

Jeff

Thanks alot. I have looked everywhere and i cant find just the ball joints. I need the actual joint not the boot seal. plus if i got the boot seal i would have to get the grease packed in right?

Have a close look at the control arms ... you'll see the balljoints are an integral part of the control arm (i.e. they are welded onto it). Unless you want to do some cutting and welding to graft a different balljoint onto the arm then you have to get new arms or get the old ones reco'd. If the balljoints aren't completely worn out and only have a bit of play in them you should be able to find someone in your area who can recondition them. What they do is drill a hole in the bottom of the joint and inject some kind of nylon or teflon (not really sure what it is) into it. Probably easier to just get new arms...

Have fun getting the arms off!!!90% of the time the bushing is frozen to the pivot bolt.If you don't have a blue wrench it can be a royal pain!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

hehehe ... teach you to live somewhere where white stuff falls from the sky in winter (I assume) :). I lost count of how many lower control arms I've taken off and put back on LONG ago and NOT ONE has ever been stuck.

I live in an area where we get "white stuff" at least two or three times a winter...what is worse, our city founding fathers deem it wise to clear it away using salt...brilliant eh? What I have come to use as a mantra is "if it doesn't get loctite, it needs to get antiseized".
Yes I am very envious of anyone living where things don't rust apart, and space is not considered at such a high premium that they compulsively crush anything they can't sell yesterday. More power to you!!!
