Check SportsCar Magazine (SCCA) for used IT race ready cars. They are out there for as little as 5K. If your estimate is 5.8K you could easily double that getting your car competitive. And, it will take years and you will redo things several times. It's great to say that you just want to get out there but once you do you need to be able to keep up and soon you'll want more.

Thanks for the post Don! Seriously I really don't care too much about being a front runner, I just wanna get out there an have some fun. The car as of now is being built for improved touring. If I really change my mind and want to spend some serious cash, rally. The only real reason I am going with this car is that the price was right, free. I have added up pretty much everything I want to do, most of which I can do myself, i.e. engine, tranny work, paint, metal fab, etc. and it comes to about 5400 bucks.
I am sure there will be some hidden costs I havent figured for but what the hell:) I would love to find a race ready car, and I have seen a few on ebay as you suggested. But nothing really caught my eye. And anything on the nicer side is like mucho expensive.

Seriously, sometimes I think the SCCA is starting to take itself to seriously. Its not supposed to be about restraining rules and politics. Its supposed to be going out and bailing around and having fun. But then I have never meet an SCCA driver who didn't think he was a real PRO. Hehehe

Lets all just have fun and waste some gas!

Thanks again!
James

You need to decide what type of racing your going to do then get a rule book. You cant build a car POTLUCK then expect it to fit in a class and be competitive. Then decide if your wife will let you spend that kind of money :). I would recomend buying a car thats allready done and ready to run. On the Improved Touring SCCA boards people have spent 15 - 20 thousand getting a car from your stage to siting on the track. Some of the BMWs run over 40K but there out of everybodys price range. I bought a old ITC race civic for 1500 then put another 6000 in it getting it on the track and Improved touring is one of the least expensive classes. No joke! Its all the little things that add up. I have kept a list from day one. So if you can get a race ready car off e-bay or ? You will be way ahead time and money wise. I wish some one had told me this before I started O'well, I probably would have torn any thing I bought apart looking for ways to make it safer and faster, but items like paint and grease are the cheap things.

Hi guys, hope you like the pics. I am going to add more through the entire restoration. I am curious if anyone out there has any information on getting replacement fenders? Mine where pretty rotted right at the bottom. I can probably fix them but it will take quite a bit of work. I would rather just pic up some new replacement fenders. Also!, I have seen pictures of people with Aero kits for these, where do I get that. This is going to be a SCCA race car so I defintily want an Aero kit for it.

Thanks a ton guys and keep the posts coming!

James

Ahh looks very nice, do these engines have any problems with block cracks, seeing as how there aluminum?

Also where did you get the part for it to be rebuilt. Can stuff still be bought.

Later,
James

Looks like the head was glass beaded? Inspect closely for glass pieces that were missed by the machine shop. I didn't do that once and the bearings got wasted :( when the oil carried those pesky pieces into the oil galleys

Hi guys, just wondering where I could get an engine rebuild kit for a 78 civic 1200. I am rebuilding the car to run in SCCA events. Also any performance components available.

Thanks,
Jim
