So there are differences between early/late EL engines?

Is one better than the other (in terms of reliability & esp. for making power)?

I think you need a 1751 crank...check to see if the bore spacing on the EL motor is even or not, I think the journals are more widely spaced on the EL as opposed to the EG-EM block. If so you want the early 1751 crank, 79 to 80, 49 state crank to fit the Civic trannys, or the 81-82 crank to fit the Accord and Prelude trannys, all 1751 rods are interchangeable.

My guess is yes on the '79-81 blocks (with matching rods).

Would anyone be able to tell me if it would be possible to swap the crank and rods from an EG(1599cc non-CVCC from '76-'78 Accord) engine into an EL (1602cc non-CVCC from '79-'83 Accord/Prelude) engine?

All things going well this would result in a bore/stroke of 77x93 (~1732cc), which is pretty darned close to the USDM EK1's 77x94 (1751cc).
