I had someone look at the spindle, they told me it was cast iron, to me it looks like steel, anyone?

I had 2in drop spindles on a old bug, they are manufactured from OEM spindles, just cut and rewelded lower-not the strongest, but I wasnt racing it either. I have a wagon knuckle and I was looking at the clearance. If you could find a good welder you could cut the strut seat and have it welded about .5 to .75 inches lower and it would clear the axle, give you a moderate drop and retain full supension travel. Anyone think it would be ok, or too weak? What about camber, how should it be angled to give good neg camber?
