Not neccessarily, but if I had the preference, then I would run the chrome top ring. It will last longer too.

One of the set has the top ring as cast iron, not chrome. the other three sets are chrome top ring.

So the question is would a non-chrome top ring be bad?

what do you mean by mixing the rings? Usually only the top ring is chrome. That is the way it came from Honda too......chrome top ring.
