That was interesting...
I checked it and it still ran, so nope. Not the alternator.
Thanks for that quick check!

Yep it works, just a quick way you can see if it is putting out. Either that or take the alt. off and take to the parts store, they will check the output for free.

Does that really work? Seems so simple, but hey, if it works I will try it! I will try it today!
Thanks.

easy way to check the alt. is start the car and then pull the neg. side of the battery off...if it dies alt. is bad.

Hey guys. I have also found that the idle drops when I turn on stuff like the lights. Also, when I brake hard, the engine wants to die far more than when I just cruise to a stop. My friend is having a similar problem in his 69 Land Cruiser and he said it might be the alternator. Does this sound like a possiblilty?

I had the same problem with my 77 cvcc automatic, it would start right up when it was cold but when it got hot it would take forever to start, I burned out a couple of starters, I never did figure out what was wrong, I did check the choke, changed all the filters, I thought it might have been the accelerator pump on the carb. I got it up to Illinois and was going to fix it up, I pulled the front bumpers off and there was not much left under there so it became a parts/experimental car. Also maybe take those sensors out of the carb and make sure they are working right. just take em out and turn your key on and short them to something, they should open and close. Hope it helps.

The smoke is white as fgar as I can see. The car was not driven very much at all over the past couple of years. Also, when having trouble starting it, I can smell gas which I guess is from flooding? I'm new to this whole choke thing and I only use it in the morning for intial start up. During the day when it has been running, there should not be any need for the choke I am guessing.
My main concern is the stalling as this creates a dangerous situation.

What color is the smoke? Black smoke would point to a very rich condition, possibly the source of the drivability problems. Bluish-white smoke would be oil burning, pointing to bad rings or valve seals. White smoke could mean a head gasket problem. See how everything is after the tune-up. Did the car sit for any length of time before you got it?

Hi Jon,
Thanks for the reply. When I say it won't crank, I mean that it just won't fire: it wants to and just turns and turns. When it finally does, a huge burst of smoke kicks out of the tail.
I am going to being doing a HUGE tune up on this in the next week or so including:
New plugs, wires, dist cap, dist rotor, dist o'ring, K&N filter, fuel filter, fuel lines, Ign points, Ign condensor, card o'ring ?, do an oil change and fluid change, and do a deep clean on the carb. I hope this helps centeralize the issue or be the issue itself.

Jeff, when you say it won't crank up, do you mean that the engine won't turn over at all, or keeps turning over without firing? One thing you can check is your choke, I've had all three of these problems when the choke isn't in the right spot. Other things to check are fuel filters, spark plugs, cap, rotor, points, condenser. If any of them are bad or need replacement, it can make chasing the main problem all that much harder.

Hey everyone! I am new here. I just bought my 5th Honda on Sunday - a 1977 CVCC Civic, at. I love it! I also have a 93 del Sol Si.
Anyhow, I am having some problems with the car.
1st - It has a lot of trouble starting when it's hot. After it's been running for a while, if I turn the engine off and try to restart it, it takes like 5 minutes. It just won't crank up.
2nd - It stalls all the time. When I come to a stop at a light or something, it stalls. When I go on a turn, it stalls.
3rd - The idling is too varing...in park or nuetral, it idles high and loud. But as soon as I put it into 2 or 1, the idling drops drastically and barely chugs, mostly the engine stalls.
I heard from the guy that I bought it from that there is a screw to adjust the indling under the carb but I could not find it. The only thing I have done is adjust the trottle cable to increase the idle. But that didn't help in driving gears, only park and nuetral.
Does anyone have any suggestions???
Thanks.
Jeff
