Here's a bunch of the fan switches on e-bay, for anyone who needs one.

I had similar trouble with a thermoswitch a while back. I needed to have the rad reconditioned anyway and the guy who looked at it said that the reason why I couldn't get the switch out was that someone had covered it with loctite when they screwed it in. The replacement for that switch lasted a whole 6 months before giving up the ghost. The one I've got now seems to be working okay though.

By the way, I simply disconnected the wires from the back of the thermoswitch and 'shorted' them together with a bunch of twisted up copper wire and turned the ignition key part way. The fan started so I knew the thermoswitch was duff.

Creepy emails? That is why I never post my address on here. I have in the past but search engines scan sites like this one and find addresses then you gets tons of spam. Drives me crazy to get 8 emails and only 2 are legit. Another point.. where it says "click here to be removed from this list" My isp said to never do that because in most cases it is a conformation that the address is active.

Bruce,
Thanks for the suggestion. I looked and found the switch on the internet, but I couldn't get the old one out, that's why I needed the rewire information that everyone provided.
I love the little car, but I have to find a new home for it. I can't work on it, I have developed
serious back problems in the last three years. I tried selling on Ebay, but kept pulling the
listing because of creepy calls and emails.
Anyway thanks to everyone for their help, you seem like a bunch of very nice people.

you can also get them at your local auto parts store, and 74 cvic, if you do not want your fan running all the time, run two wires from the thermoswitch wires(the ones you connected) to a switch in your dash, I have more than given up on those thermoswitches so I just install a switch, it lets your car heat up a little and if your in a colder area it helps heat up inside the car.

Dave, according to http://www.slhondaparts.com, it is still available. It's not too expensive, the cost of shipping may outweigh what it costs to buy the switch at your local Honda dealer.

Hey guys just a question... is the fan switch still available? I have one spare in my parts car just in case.

It worked. The fan runs when the car runs!
I don't know how to thank you guys. To show my appreciation, I am going to donate to this website in the names of:
Jonathon 152.163253.2 donation $10
Ramon 207.5.2.130 donation $10
Felipe 200.30.231.7 donation $10
Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks, Jonathan is correct. I have run my car this way for ten years. Temp switch is about $20.00 US and they dont last that long for some reason.

Ok, I am off to try these suggestions.
Thanks so much for your time! I'll let you know what happens a little later today.

By Jonathan (66.252.173.251) on Thursday, October 30, 2003 - 09:58 am:

Oh yah, and if you have power to the fan and good grounds, it's a bad fan. It could be the temp switch itself, I think these go bad pretty often on the early Civics.

By Jonathan (66.252.173.251) on Thursday, October 30, 2003 - 09:57 am:

The wires to the fan run from a 12v source, through the switch, then through the fan, to ground. When you take the wires out of the temp switch and connect them together, it has the same effect as if the temp sensor is reading hot all the time, so when the ignition is on, the fan is on. If you connect these wires together and the fan still doesn't turn, check that you have power to the fan and check your grounds. If there is no power to the fan, you've got other wiring issues to deal with upstream of the cooling fan.

Ramon,

my question is,,,are you saying nothing has to connect to the back of the fan. It will run without anything going directly to it.

just connect the wire coming from the harness
(that would normally go to the sensor)connect
it to the harness wire for the radiator (that would normally go to the radiator fan)
connect these two wires together??

By 74civic (74civic) (152.163.253.2) on Thursday, October 30, 2003 - 09:43 am:

Ok, here's what I see on my car.

I have one blue and one black wire that comes from the wiring harness to the sensor at the bottom of the radiator.
and
I have one blue and one black wire that comes
from the wiring harness to the back of the radiator fan.

Take me from there please.

74Civic, here's wiring diagrams for the CVCC models, they're mostly similar to the 1200 diagrams.

http://web.njit.edu/~jjj8778/civic/wiring/

I do have the 1200 wiring diagrams, but the computer I have with a scanner isn't working quite right. I'll try to switch the scanner to a different computer and scan them in this weekend, if I get the time. It looks like the wires you have to connect together are black with a yellow trace, and blue.

By Ramon (207.5.2.130) on Thursday, October 30, 2003 - 08:59 am:

Unplug the wires at the fan switch sensor in the bottom on the radiator first. Next take the male and female ends on the wiring harness side and plug them in together. The wires on the fan switch will just hang there. This closes the loop permanently so every time you turn your ignition on the fan will run.

I have a 74 civic and the radiator fan has stopped working. I have the general idea about
hotwiring the fan so that it runs whenever the
car runs. I need the exact diagram of which existing wires to use or were to tie in new wires to accomplish this. Help please. I know this is not rocket science. My brother and dad have always helped me(and made me help them like crawling under cars because I was smaller than them or using my hands to get into tight spots) with car problems and as of today I can't find their email address or website to heaven. Well sh*t, that made me cry. If you still have your dad and your brothers, cherish every moment with them becuase they can be taken away in the blink of an eye. Ok, enough of that. Can anybody help me with the hotwiring of the radiator fan? Thanks
