Hey knifeboy
Here is a little trick to cut down on the overspray and minamize the dust, hang those cheap plastic drop sheets or garbage bags on the wall, the static from the plastic will attract the dust and some of the overspray.
By Knifeboy (142.173.4.227) on Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 04:38 am: |
haha... great story Shreck! I'll be sure to clear the floor of tools and turn off my phone the next time I paint the car.
I wish I had somewhere to paint outside. All I had was a cramped up single car garage which left about a little over 2 feet between the car and the drywall all around! Imagine the overspray I got in my hair and on my face (around the respirator) as I crouched down to paint the side panels. Looked like a really bad dye job. haha

Hey knifeboy
I painted my 76 Civic out side at the cottage. Took the compressor in the back and stripped everything except the windows and bumpers. By the end of the weekend it was back togeather for the trip back to the city. I was amazed at the quality of the job. I was lucky there were no bugs and the wind was still that day.
A few weeks before that I took time off work to paint it in the garage at home. When I had the car stripped and taped my wife calls me at home come and get me from work in the city Woooo Waaaa I am having a baby. I freaked and ran out to the car to just put the lights back in when I rolled my foot on a grounded screw driver and went sliding uner the car. I thought I was having a baby with the pain in my ancle. Needless to say I ended up in the hospital too but mine was not a false alarm.
The car was pained again in 1990, this time in a proper paint booth with no screw drivers or pregant women around.

My next paint project is Justin's wagon, he just doesn't know it yet. I think a nice flat orange would look pretty nice on his car. None of that shiny red with that glass-like finish. haha... What do you guys think?

By Knifeboy (142.173.4.227) on Friday, February 20, 2004 - 05:29 pm: |
Hey Scholzj
I painted the car in my garage using spray cans I picked up at a local automotive store. If I recall correctly I used about 2-3 cans of primer, 5 cans of paint, and ~2 cans of clear. I would've prefered to use my compressor and paint gun but I didn't have time (or space) to strip the entire car down to paint it properly. So I had to do one section, drive it to work the next day, then do the next section, and so on...
The entire paint process, and filling in the door locks, took 3 evenings. The trickiest and most time consuming part of the entire job was the masking. I'd say about 2/3 of the time was spent masking off the car.

Kurt. To keep it going, I will put it in the orange car. Maybe get a rebuild with en crank and rods. I want to keep it as it is the original motor from the blue 77 with the the EL conversion. I got the headers off of a 2nd gen civic when I removed a 5spd from it. The 2nd gen civic also had a set of 4-2-1 headers that were to far gone to install, but I took them anyway as I could use the plate that bolts to the head if I ever get some more made. Maybe one day!
By Kurt (207.6.47.162) on Sunday, January 18, 2004 - 05:38 pm: |
So what are you doing with the 1200 motor...I see you have a set of headers on there.

Hello to everone. My name is Glen I have been looking around here for ages, getting a lot of inspiration.
I have just finished an EL conversion in my 77 civic. It isn't quite finished yet as I have some tidying to do with the wiring and relocate the fuel pump to the back, under the car. Other than that, it is done. Cruising at 110km/h on the highway is a breeze and acceleration through the gears is great. The motor came from a 79 accord and the gearbox is from the 2nd gen accord(cable clutch). Anyway, I have posted some pics here. Have a look and see what you think.

Angus, how far do those wheels stick out without the flares? Do speedy make any with the correct offset so they dont require flares? And also what did you have to do to the guards ie are the rolled? Thx

Hi Yellow 78CVCC,
The Flares are from www.fibremaster.com.au
Give them a call and tell them they did the flares on my car and they will know exactly what ones you need. They are Holden Gemini flares.
Hi Shea Laking,
What grooves in the roof are you talking about ?
The rims are Speedy brand. They will drill 4x120 stud pattern into them for free when purchased.
Talk to you soon

Heh, yeah, my Dad works for a liquor distributor, and every once in a while he comes home with a few cases of wine. He built the wood rack last month after the blue one behind it ran out of space. I did a little more cleaning today, and I'm gonna try for tomorrow to get the car in there. Then the front end comes apart, a little rust gets fixed, and a 5-speed and a/c go in! (Hopefully)

in 1982 the Civic 2nd gen. became the "nose" of the Triumph with the square headlights.
It is an amazing car to drive, because it has something that later Civic's didn't have, that is power in low RPM's.
I have had all the gen's civic up until 2000 and i can say that this is the best Civic I have ever driven. we went on a holiday to scotland this summer and drove 2500 km (that is 1500 miles) in two weeks without any problem.
the dual carb makes it a car that is faster than most people on the road think ;-)

Keil,
The British car industry suffered from the same problems our US car industry suffers from today.
The moneyed class demands greater and greater profits from their investments...the "rich" in terms of capital, the "workers" in terms of greater wages and benefits, all at the expense of capital investments i.e. research and development of new products and modern plants in which to produce them. In other words both sides in screwing each other are screwing everyone including themselves.
By Keil Shepherd (Medicineman) (81.135.9.125) on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 - 10:49 am: |
The 'local content' was, as I recall, the interior. Apparently the engines and transmissions were shipped straight over from Japan; the bodywork was built here according to Honda spec and interior was locally sourced.
As for it being a sad end to a great marque, I doubt it!
Okay, it was the wrong vehicle for a company that was famous for 'performance' vehicles and motorcycles. The Acclaim was a family workhorse, pure and simple. Did exactly what it said on the tin with the minimum of fuss. This Honda 'hybrid' though was one of BL's most popular and reliable cars. What does that say about our British cars I wonder?
Answer (They're crap!)
By PJ (80.192.120.181) on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 - 05:59 am: |
Triumph Acclaim's were re-badged Second Generation Civic Sedans, built in the UK (although I recall adverts shouting about them having x% "local content" - whatever that meant!) A joint venture between Honda and the seriously mis-managed and ailing British Leyland (then owners of the Triumph brand.) They sold well and were the last cars to wear the Triumph name. Generally considered a rather sad end to a once great car maker. The Honda/BL partnership evolved producing a range of Rover badged cars based on Civics and Accords through the 80s and 90s. Oddly although 2nd Generation Civics are now as rare as hen's teeth in the UK I often see Acclaims for sale, some in astounding, mint condition...usually languishing, unloved in the small adds for a few hundred pounds.

Hi John S
If I understand your question correctly, there's no spoilers for mk2 Civics left in the UK. Sjupergrover's quite right, they were attached to the Sports version (which shared their engine and transmission with the Triumph Acclaim as I seem to recall) but not the basic model. As for sourcing anything from dealers, ours are pretty much of a wash out. I probably know more than they do! Even the salesman who sold the car to my mother originally, swore blind that these cars didn't have optional sterios, yet here I am looking at one right now.....
Sorry I didn't have better news.

Cheers Zippy! It wasn't an easy job, in fact I made a small 'modification' and put three holes down the length of each of the upper chassis rails, as you can see in the below pic, so after they've been welded on I can spray in primer and rustproofing wax. They're not going to rust through in a hurry!

don, I just bought my first civic(and first project car ever) about a month ago and have been searching for inspiration and knowledge daily. I was leaning toward a dusty orange color but with your permission i'd love to try the white-blue combo. That is by far the cleanest, most classy yet still sporty car ive seen; especially considering that it doesnt have any body effects. a couple questions....
is that a true white?
any reason for no air dam?
to everyone else......
how come so few cars have rear spoilers, not the giant stupid wing type that every 16 year old buys, but the smaller above the rear glass type? (just to save weight?)

Could do what I've had to do so far, namely make everything yourself. The tops of both inner wings and the panelwork surrounding the headlights on mine were totally rotten. The upper chassis rail bits were virtually non-existant. I had to 'guesstimate' what they would have looked like originally. I think they worked out pretty well.

Mine's sort of a work-in-progress. As you can see it's metallic blue but that's going to change! When it's done I'm going to spray it black, convert to rear disk brakes and slap on a set of turbine alloys. I'm hoping to have the '78 bumpers modified by a professional so they're full wrap-around steel like the earlier cars but I still get the sleek look of the built in indicator/ sidelight clusters. I'm also looking for a couple of sets ('cause I've got twice the number of doors!) of the side trim strips (can anyone help locate some?) Inside the car I'm going for a Recaro driving seat, installing the roof console from a Z600 and fitting an original 70's Honda Pioneer sterio.
Oh yes, and finishing it off with a hand-built high efficiency stainless steel exhaust. You know, fire it up and the neighbourhood thinks the world is coming to an end!

100% bone stock 78 1200. OK, not quite, I got the Felpro gasket and Pertronics Ignition.
I re-painted the car 10+ years ago, and it's now my weekend driver, grocery hauler and a real chic magnet!
