Heat gun is not a good idea kurt, it just makes it all soft and guey like sticky fudge, I would not eat it though. I used three things.
1. A variety of wood chesles and a hammer to get the thick stuff off.
3. A putty knife, but I ground the corners off so that it would not gough the floor and sharpened it like a knife. I could get the rest off pretty easy with this.
Then I just finished up with paint thinners and finally cleaned it with wax/slicone remover.
And like you Kurt I used two part epoxy Ryno Bedliner.

A heat gun may also help at softening up the glue although I have not tried it myself.
I actually added more undercoating to the bottom of my car and have Ryno Lined (spray on box liner) the floor and bottom of my trunk. Its not a race car though so the extra few pounds of weight isn't an issue.

Hey Jeremy,
I have a better idea than going through what Adrian went through, I will trade you a Civic from Central Ontario for yours.
You will benifit from lots of naturally occuring weight savings (i.e. rust) and won't have to worry about chiseling or scraping the tar undercoat and sound deadener from the floorpans as they rotted away years ago.
HaHaHa!!!
If it gets cold out where you are (25 F or below), chip off the inside sound deadener in the dead of winter, it is hard as a rock, and comes off very easily, no muss, no fuss.
The bottom undercoat, good luck, it doesn't look fun, obviousy Adrian has lots of patience!!

Removing all the goo from the underside can also help reduce the weight a goodly amount. I stripped it all off the current rally car and ended up with about a 5kg pile of the stuff. It's not easy though unless you have a chassis rotator or a hoist. I found the best way to get it off was to soak it in kero for an hour or two and it then just peeled off. If the interior stuff doesn't flake or chisel off easily you might try kero on it as well (makes rather a mess though).

cool thanks guys. I am making it an auto-x racer so I don't need the extra insulation.

If you are in a cold climate it comes off real easy with a wood chesel and hammer. If your chesels are sharp they will do a good job. Wear goggles, in the cold it is brittle and goes every where. Better cold than warm. I tried to take it off during the summer and in spots it is pretty sticky. In Ontario on 78's

Yep, that black tary stuff is insulation / sound proofing. I've removed it from several cars (rally and race cars that don't need it) and had good results with a ball pien hammer. Usually it's so old that it's gone relatively hard and brittle (will probably depend a little on the climate where you are) so if you just bash away on the floor (not too hard, you don't want to dent the floor) it flexes and just cracks apart and flakes off in nice sheets. If that doesn't work you'll need a nice sharp chisel ... a rasor blade will never work, the stuff is just too tough. The inside stuff is easy ... you should try removing all the goo from the underside!
If this is a road car I'd probably leave the stuff on. You'd be surprised what a difference it makes.

the black stuff is actually a sealer......

ok so I pulled up the carpet in my 77 and there is this black stuff that is glued to the metal. Anyone have any idea of how to get rid of this stuff. I was going to try a razor blade but I figured that someone might have a better way of removing it.
