I'll have to keep my eye on slhondaparts, as for Majestic or hondaautomotiveparts.com I tried to order it and a set of bumper end caps from them ages ago and was told they were deleted and the order was cancelled by them.

By Justin (199.60.112.10) on Saturday, December 20, 2003 - 02:03 pm:

They have everything listed on www.slhondaparts.com I usually get the part number from there, and check my local dealer :)

By Don (199.2.139.179) on Saturday, December 20, 2003 - 12:33 pm:

Majestic Honda has it listed on thier website for $121 USD

By Keil Shepherd (Medicineman) (81.131.131.126) on Saturday, December 20, 2003 - 05:12 am:

Hi Don

The dealers have stopped dealing in them and the wreckers have long since wrecked them, not that there were very many in the UK to begin with. In any case the chances are any Civic in a wreckers over here has rotted in the same places as mine, which means I need to get bits from somewhere with a better climate. I've imported stuff from all over the globe. USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand etc. from a new fender to alloy wheels, simply because I can't get them over here.

So yes, I AM crazy........... About these cars!

By Don (199.2.139.221) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 02:51 pm:

Why would you be so crazy as to ship a front valance from NZ? He was probably looking out for your own good. Either get it from a wrecker or Honda most likely has them. Mathew has sent me items, no sweat.

By Keil Shepherd (Medicineman) (81.131.166.99) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 11:52 am:

Jared, Ramon

Hope all goes well with your conversions, looks like you've got a lot of work there! Definitely your shipping situation could have been improved I think. Months ago I contacted Mat Woodburn re a new front valance for an EB3 but despite assurances to the contrary, nothing happened. Looking at what happened to you guys I guess he supposed a single valance wasn't worth the trouble. Hmmm...

Thankfully Russ Lewis came to the rescue with some new end bits for my valance. Hopefully by the new year I may be close to having the front of the car welded up!

Happy Christmas!!

Keil

Well Justin thanks, now I know where to go for some stuff, so why havent you done RHD yet?

RAMON if you are going full JDM spec, I have a line on some true JDM NOS fender mount mirrors for the first gen. They are fender mount and he wants 7000 yen for them shipped, which is around $100 US I think. I decided not to get them, want miata mirrors maybe or some power mirrors. If you are interested let me know. I also have two full sets of the JDM fender marker lights. Im shaving mine and wont need them.

By Justin (199.60.112.10) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 05:59 pm:

very cool!!!
My parents and sis live in Auckland, If I need anything, I just get them to go to strong for honda and pick it up, and ship it out :)

By jms (66.242.1.129) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 04:29 pm:

Thats cool, the U.S. did not get that extra switch panel, makes for a lot of extra switch space?? Keil yes it was Matt & Ken Woodburn. Ramon you are right they need to be schooled on shipping abroad, if I can go buy a complete JDM spec B16 or ZC swap for the price I paid for this RHD setup those JDM engine importers must know a cheap way to import, those are the shippers he should have went with. Truth is though we really didnt need such a huge cut, but I guess if you are going with the wipers too then you would.

In either case though Im very happy they did all the work to send it over.

By Adrian (Evocivic) (165.228.11.61) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 03:16 pm:

That's the standard hazard switch for Australian (and I guess NZ) EB1s & EB2s. EB3s had it on the column. The switch to the right of the column is for the rear defroster, the choke is missing (should be in the hole to the left of the column below the heater controls, next to the lighter).

By Ramon (207.5.2.130) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 02:53 pm:

Thats him!!!!

By Keil Shepherd (Medicineman) (81.135.102.81) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 02:33 pm:

Jared

Here in the UK our hazard switch is on top of the steering column cowl as well. The small box & switch that you have on yours, over here is the switch for the rear fog lamp.

Keil

BTW: the bloke in NZ you got the bits from, wasn't Matthew Woodburn was it?

By Ramon (207.5.2.130) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 01:55 pm:

One more thing, I don't think they will be selling anymore of those kits to the states. The shipping, customs, and fees are just way to high. They really didn't know much about ship to port transportation either.

By Ramon (207.5.2.130) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 01:50 pm:

It is going in a 77 CVCC body. Sounds good to share tips on the install. I am going to try and do the entire firewall with wipers too. I also bought the NZ rear tail lights, front side markers, and bumper lights too. I want it too look as close to original JDM as possible.

By jms (198.26.123.37) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 01:15 pm:

But Im very happy with this part!!! Sets the car apart from others.

By jms (132.38.190.10) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 01:13 pm:

Nice, what is your time plan for getting it together, have you looked into the different mods you will do? Lets share our thoughts so if we have any tips/probs we let each other know:) Cant wait to see your car, is it cvcc or 1200?

By Ramon (207.5.2.130) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 12:27 pm:

Yup!!!!!! It came out just a bit more than I ready to pay. I had all the same fees. I live in Gilroy, CA so I will drive about an hour to pick it up next monday. I will get some picks when its out of the crate. My emails on the bottom

By jms (198.26.123.36) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 12:18 pm:

Wish he would have broke it down further and went with Fex Ex or something, MUCH MUCH cheaper probably by as much as HALF or so!

By jms (198.26.123.37) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 12:17 pm:

Ramon mine actually came thru San Fran so yours will probably be much less than I had to pay, as I had to get an import broker and trucking shipper because there was no way I was driving 7 hrs (Houston) to clear it and get it. It was supposed to only be 3hrs away (Austin) but since they shipped a personal item thru a commercial shipper only they refused to FWD it to Austin.

By jms (198.26.123.37) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 12:14 pm:

Ramon, DAMN so Im not the only one? Why havent you posted any pics or info about yours, lets see the car. I will email you offline about the $, the shipping became an issue because the company he went with was only supposed do to commercial and not individual stuff, so that was a prob. Because of that they refused to ship it to its final destination, so that was an extra fee.
Yeah I got mine from Ken & Matt-KW Hisotrics.

And there was:
Orig purchase price
original shipping price
orig crate fee
import duty (small tax)
import broker fee (for the customs stuff)
Fwding shippers fee (customs paperwork)
sea frieght fee
warehouse fee
extended storage fee (had to wait for the people to sort out the commercial/individual ship prob)
extra shipping/trucking price to get it to my door + drivers tip

It added up to more than I expected to have to pay

Jonathon,
pedals may bolt up (even easier) I havent got around to looking at everything yet thoguh to compare compatability, but the steering column mount will need to be cut and welded on, and the steering shaft where it goes thru the firewall is on opposite sides, so it needs to be cut and welded in-the mounting area. Front crossmember is different-it has different mounts for the steering shaft underneath (opposite sides) although the RHD and LHD holes for it to run thru are on all crossmembers. And lastly the steering shaft underneath is different, top part, the stuff inside the car is probably the same. Yes the cables are shorter, so I need to grab some spares, but they will be modded for the D16 maybe anyway. D16 is same side as 1200 engine. And of course the dash is slightly different.

I havent got my switches all configured yet, as the AC stuff will be going in my trunk model, it was going to be insane to try and get it in the D16 swap. So I will have some block off plates in each car, the hazard thing might be extra but Ive never seen it before so it would be hard to let go. If you notice it doesnt have one on the steering column like ours do.

By Jonathan (66.252.173.251) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 11:34 am:

I've never priced a car getting shipped overseas, but there's probably companies that specialize in doing it. I don't know about the legality of it, but you may be able to take the VIN and ID tags off one car that you have a title for, and swap them over to the RHD car. Then register it as normal, the less you tell your state DMV, the less problems that'll get in the way.

Take lots of pictures, 'cause this is a conversion I'd like to try in the future if I ever get around to building up a Civic for autocrossing. It looks like the RHD cars are a little better balanced with the engine on the left and the driver sitting on the right. Which side of the engine bay does the D16 sit on?

Is the hazard switch built into the dash, or is it a seperate unit? It looks like a good idea for adding a switch or two for accessories (fog lights or something along those lines). If you wind up using a US steering column I'll buy that switch if you're willing to sell it. I've run out of places on my dash to put switches.

The reason I asked about the speedo cable is because it'll probably be a different length than the left hand drive cars, and trying to find somehow to take up that extra slack might cause binding in the cable.

Are the pedal mounts really that different that they need to be welded on? It looks like they should bolt on in the stock location.

By Ramon (207.5.2.130) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 11:25 am:

I'm curious how much yours was? I am picking mine up next Monday In San Francisco. I am sure we got it from the same guy in NZ right.

By jms (198.26.123.37) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 10:19 am:

I thought about the whole car, but its way more $ and then a whole other animal to try and get it registered for the US, plus I already have my D16 swap under way. Plus all I wanted at first was just several Fed Ex style packages of the parts I needed, since we couldnt be sure which ones were necessary we decided on the whole cut (that unfortunately had to go thru import crap), but I will narrow it down for the next guy. Hopefully there wont be one, and I will have the only KNOWN thus far RHD 1st gen civ on the entire N. & S. American/Cad. continent! The welding is easy part as Im getting better at it, and its only for the steering wheel mount and then the pedal mounts. It came with all the cables, but all that stuff should interchange anyway. He gave me both the auto and manual pedals too. Actually if I were putting it in my daily driver I think I could have it done in a week or less depending on how much time I devote. The fire wall in my D16 swap is already bare and ready to be modified-its everything else that will take forever, engine etc.

I have the wiper linkage, but am not using it, it will be a cross breed as Im not using the RHD switches either, the wiper switch must have got broke in shipping and I like my intermitten set up I have right now better anyway. Visibility with the LHD wipers on the RHD car is still fine, I sat in the pass seat in rain while my wife drove and I could see just fine-no worries about that. I dont want to mess with that sheet metal up there anyway.

The haz switch looks factory, its pretty cool huh?

Also I have a KMH speedo in my daily driver with a US cable and its pretty much right on, off by about 5 MPH but I also put bigger tires and wheels on it.

By Jonathan (66.252.173.251) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 09:55 am:

Jared, looks like you got quite a project on your hands. This may be a silly question, but would it have been just as easy to import the whole car? It may have cost more, but it would save you quite a bit of time with swapping parts over, especially with any cutting and welding that you may have to do. I'm guessing that's the choke knob to the right of the steering column? Is the hazard light switch factory? I don't think I could get used to the turn signals on the other side of the column like that. Did you get the windshield wiper linkage and everything? it looks pretty difficult to swap the wipers over to the other side of the car. Is the speedometer cable different? Good luck with it, and take lots of pictures!

By jms (132.38.190.10) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 09:36 am:

Here are some pics, not too good as its still in the crate. Its a full firewall cut. Its overkill so once I figure out what exactly is needed from the firewall it will save some shipping hassles for the next person.

Its going in my D16a6 swap so it wont be gettung use for a while, I though about putting it in my daily driver just so I could use it right now.

Anyway if you are interested I will let you know the details and the stupid high cost. It wont be as bad for the next person though, as we didnt know what all was needed. So we had to import it (rather than regular mail) it was so big (300lbs) and it came with multiple fees.

I will also document the swap for Randys website.
