The most important accessory arrived today for my car.... License Plates!! I've finally got it back on the road and driving. Needs a good wash now, but still good enough to drive around.

Ok. here's another quick update on the stuff I've gotten done....
I ran a wire down the A pillar for the light on the clock in the overhead console. There was an extra connector behind the dash, so now the light comes on when the rest of the gauge lights come on.
I fixed the temp gauge light, it wasn't getting a decent ground. I can now see it at night! (Not that I'm driving it anywhere..... yet )
Took the dash back out to get the heater cables working correctly. I can now control the heater, and the dash is completely back together! No extra parts!
I also fixed the light in the shifter for the Hondamatic indicator (broken wire). I've never seen a smaller light bulb than that one.
The wire for the brake light when the handbrake is on was also broken. It now works
Can't wait until I get it on the road. Won't be long now!

Keil, here's a better picture of the radio and console. I would have taken more, but the batteries died on my camera just after this picture. It shows how much the console clears the heater outlet too.
I also was able to get the 1/3 amber 2/3 red taillights in, all the splices worked fine.
I'm going to try to splice together a set of the all-red lights tomorrow (not that I really need them, just to see if it'll work like I thought).

Keil, I'll take some more pictures of the radio, it's mounted in there with a surround that holds it in place. It's not fastened down yet, because I'm not sure if I'm going to use that one, or hold out for one that fits the factory location. It sticks out pretty far, so I don't know if the shifter will clear when I put in the 5-speed. I'm going to hold off mounting anything permanently until then.
The console is short enough so the heater outlet has plenty of room. I'm not sure how it works with the factory console, unless there's some ducts around the side of it or something.

Hey Jonathan
I see from one of your pics that you have a stereo fitted in the dash cubby? If so, does it have a surround? If it does could you post some pics of it? I’ve got to make something similar for my Pioneer unit and I’m in need of ideas.
BTW I like the idea of making your own central console. I’ve been thinking about doing it too, but I’m just wondering about the heater vents under the dash. Wouldn’t a central console would obscure the middle one perhaps? Are you fitting a kind of baffle to redirect the air flow?
Cheers
Keil

Tom, taking the pedals out isn't hard, but it can get kinda involved. Those pedals came out of a car I was taking some A/C parts out of, so the dash was already out when I took the pedals out. The heater assembly was quick to come out as well, so it wound up to be pretty easy to get the pedals out. I've never tried to get them out with the dash and heater in place. I'd think it would be pretty difficult, unless you take them apart to get them off. There's a couple of clips that hold the brake pedal in the right hand side bracket, and that MIGHT allow you to get the pedals out without taking other stuff out first. When I finally do the Hondamatic to manual conversion, I'm going to have the dash out anyway, just for that reason.
I've tried Majestic Honda, San Leandro Honda, and my local dealer. They all say the parts aren't available. I'm SOL for now, hopefully I'll get lucky in a junkyard.
I haven't wired up the A/C yet, I only have the knobs installed so far. It doesn't look too hard overall, but there's a few things I'm not sure about. I decided I'm going to put in the A/C when I do the trans swap, when the engine bay is empty and accessible.
Which lift do you mean? I wish I had a lift to work on the car. It would make life so much easier.

I think it looks better without the fog lights. Is it hard to paint the pedal assembly...er I mean to remove and replace it? What about wiring up an AC unit? Is that pretty hard? Majestic has the complete rear wiper kit listed for around 600 (if in stock) I believe...that's seems alot for a rear wiper! May be my only option, however if I ever want one! Car looks great. Love the lift..

Chris, I think I might have an extra set at home. There's two different kinds, one kind that mounts in the grille (for CVCC's), and one that mounts through the front valance (for 1200's). I'd like to get a set of the Australian turn signals. Glenn is sending me a set, but I could always use another in case one gets broken or something. Would you want to trade one set of turn signals for another? I'll see exactly what I have as spares this weekend.
By Chris Elder (211.29.136.12) on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 02:07 am: |
heyy... those CVCC turning signals look alright.
I wouldn't mind getting a set of those myself for my AUSTRALIAN civic...
Just out of interest, is there anybody that has a pair they would be willing to sell?
(working in good condition)
just wondering.

Christoph, I got it from a wrecking yard in Pennsylvania. I bought the whole hatch, thinking I would need it all, but it looks like all I needed was the motor, washer nozzle, and the trim from the inside of the hatch. They didn't have any of the washer bag parts, but I figure I can mount another bag somewhere else in the car. They didn't have the rest of the car there, only the hatch. The wiper arm was missing when I got it, but I figured I could always buy another one. Looks like it's gonna be another long search now.
I also took the broken fog lights off the front of the car tonight, and was trying to think of something to go in place, if anything. What does everything think of the car with:
no fog lights:
with 75-77 CVCC turn signals:

Jonathan, where did you purchase your rear wiper motor?
Thanks

Ok, I got a little more work done on the car this week, so I felt like sharing my progress. Other than flushing the coolant and putting new in, here's what else I got done.
I painted the pedals I have for my soon (hopefully) to happen 5-speed swap.
I refinished a wood wheel and installed it (still have to get it prefectly lined up, I think it might be a spline off).
Made a center console template out of cardboard, and I'm going to have the sheetmetal shop make one for me out of metal. I figure it's a good place to mount either extra gauges (oil pressure, vacuum, fuel pressure, or something), or possibly a CD player. I don't know if a CD player is going to work , because I had to taper in the back of the console to clear the gas pedal.
I also found out that the regular factory hatches already have the mounting for a rear window wiper.
All I have to do is drill the holes, and find the rear wiper arm and nut. Unfortunately, they've been discontinued, no way to get them. Anyone have one they can sell? I've got all the other parts....

THIS IS MY CIVIC
By Jonathan (68.193.10.141) on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 09:19 pm: |
Well, I had to put everything back together in my Civic for now, I needed to get my Chevelle back in the garage for now. I wasn't able to get the A/C installed, but when I started up the Civic, the tach, temp, and fuel gauges worked fine (other than a burnt out bulb on the temp gauge), as did the intermittent wipers and the lighter. Hopefully I'll be able to do some more work on it again soon, but it's been kinda cold out here. The other night it went down to -4 F (-20C), so it's no fun working in that kinda weather. I hope to have another update soon on my progress!

Ah, ok, I think that clears it all up. I was missing that connector that goes from the 3-wire connector on the switch to the relay. Thanks. I'll make the correction tomorrow.
By Jonathan (68.193.10.141) on Monday, January 05, 2004 - 07:46 pm: |
Adrian, I'd like to do that, but which wire do I splice? Also, am I missing a connector or two? Coming off the switch I have two connectors, one with 6 wires, one with three. The one with 6 wires'll fit into the dash harness no problem, but the one with 3 connectors doesn't really have a place to go. The connector for the relay has 4 wires coming out of it, and I'm not really sure which wires to splice into. What I did when making up this intermediate harness was to take 5 of the 6 wires in the original harness (Black, Blue, Blue/Yellow, and two Green/Black), and connect them straight across. The last one, the blue one with the white trace, I tied into the top right connector for the relay and switch (the connector with two wires coming out of it). For the remaining three wires from the other connector on the intermittent wiper switch I matched the colors/stripes with what was in the relay. Green to green, green/white to green/white, blue/white to blue/white. I just did it this way first so I didn't hack into the wiring harness incorrectly, I can always un-do it by unplugging it all, and not have to worry about repairing any extra wires.

I don't know why you seem to making it so difficult for yourself. Just take the switch and wiring from the switch to the relays and main harness from the intermittent wiper model, plug it straight into the harness, splice in one wire and you're done.
By Jonathan (68.193.10.141) on Monday, January 05, 2004 - 07:17 pm: |
Shoot. I'm glad I left enough slack in the wires so they can be cut and re-spliced. Do you think I'm at least close? I was trying to work around it using this diagram from a service manual:
By H (24.67.134.220) on Monday, January 05, 2004 - 07:02 pm: |
Yah, I still think you got it messed up.I will post a pic soon.
By Jonathan (68.193.10.141) on Monday, January 05, 2004 - 06:54 pm: |
Ok, here's a diagram of the harness I made up. The two connectors to the right (wiper switch)are as if you were looking at the front of the plugs, and the two connectors on the left (relay and dash harness connector) are as of you were looking at the back (wire side) of the connectors. Sorry that it's a little confusing, the wires had to cross each other in quite a few places. How's it look?
By Jonathan (66.252.173.251) on Monday, January 05, 2004 - 06:30 am: |
I figured there was going to be something wrong with the blue/white wires. There were a total of four wires, and no good way to tell the difference between them. On the relay, there's two connectors that have blue/white wires running to them, one of the connectors has two wires running to it. I do have the blue/white from the switch going to the top left of the relay, and the blue/white from the dash and the other part of the switch going to the top right of the relay. I'll sketch a wiring diagram of what I did later tonight, the pictures really didn't come out too clearly.
The gauges I got off e-bay a few months (maybe a year) ago, but didn't get a chance to put them in until now. The tach does look brand-new, there's no fading at all. They looked better in person then they did in the auction. I'm just hoping they work once they're in the car
By Chris Elder (211.30.173.156) on Monday, January 05, 2004 - 05:19 am: |
DAMN, i want me a set of those gauges.
Where did you get them from?
By H (24.67.134.220) on Sunday, January 04, 2004 - 09:57 pm: |
PS
Good idea with the "intermediate wiring harness to go between the switch, relay, and the dash harness"
Nice to see you are making progress on your Civic.
Those deluxe gauges look like they are in great shape.
By H (24.67.134.220) on Sunday, January 04, 2004 - 09:46 pm: |
It is hard to tell for sure but it looks like you've got the blue/white wrong. The Bl/W from the swicth should go to the top left of the relay only. The BL/W on the top right goes to the harness and the relay.I just made a couple up for guys on the board .I will try to post a pic soon.
By Jonathan (68.193.10.141) on Sunday, January 04, 2004 - 08:30 pm: |
Ok, I didn't get the A/C in today, but I was able to work on splicing the intermittent wipers in. For anyone out there, does this look right? I know the pictures aren't the clearest, but please let me know if I made any really glaring errors. I made up an intermediate wiring harness to go between the switch, relay, and the dash harness.
By Jonathan (68.193.10.141) on Saturday, January 03, 2004 - 10:40 pm: |
Kurt, I don't think I've got them all, but close. All I added to the dash so far were the lighter ($30 at the dealer) the rear wiper switch, deluxe gauges and the A/C knobs. The gauges are really the only "luxury" item, I need the lighter to charge my cell phone when driving, the rear wiper is more of a safety thing, and since I work in the A/C industry, I think that A/C isn't so much a luxury as a necessity. Especially when it's 90 degrees and humid out. But the options are cool to have

Looks like everyone else is posting about the Civic they're working on over the winter, so I figured I might as well start taking a few pictures of mine. I finally got it in my garage, but haven't had time to work on it over the holidays, but I've gotten the chance in the past few days to really get some time in. Here's a few pictures....
Finally got around to replacing the rear bumper, which was bent and rusted....
Got the dash out....
Getting ready to put in the A/C evaporator tomorrow (still waiting for the other A/C parts), and getting the deluxe gauges ready for install....
Got the gauges installed, and installed a few interior accessories....
and finally, the reason I have to get it all buttoned up soon, I have my other car coming back home, and I need the garage space....
