Indeed. Engines (actually whole cars) are very odd things when it comes to strange noises.
A friend had an 89 Prelude that developed a horrible squeek and rattle that everybody who listened to it swore was from the cam and thus a cam bearing ... till #2 big end bearing packed it in :(.
Strange suspension squeeks and clunks that sound like they are from a rear wheel can end up being from the opposite front.
Basically sounds travel through cars and you never quite know where they will actually emerge.

I would start by checking each piece of the puzzle one at a time.Check your timming belt and cam pulley, distributor, oil pump drive, cam lobes and followers etc...until you have sytematically eliminated each piece directly related to the cam.Noises can sometimes be misleading and hard to track down.I recently bought a used pick up that the owner swore the engine was shot.It was making a horrible knocking noise that he belived was coming from the bottom end.The noise turned out to be coming from a shot water pump!

I have a 78 Civic CVCC that makes a squeaky noise at times when it is running, mine was the block on the points that rubs on the distributor shaft. Used some high temp grease and it went away, but reappears every so often. I would think if it was the cam, it should have seized solid by now, they are lubricated well. Anyone else have any thoughts.

Hey guys,
My cars practically done other than the exhaust being all crappy and leaky. But theres a noise...very annoying noise!! I thought it was the fuel pump because thats where the noise was coming from. So I replaced the fuel pump with an aftermarket model for $16CDN. The noise is still there!! I think its from the fuel pump cam. The engine has been sitting for awhile and used to make the noise constantly when first started up but ever since I installed a pair of Dellorto DHLB's the noise is set to a "once a cam revolution" squeak. Has anyone ever had this problem?

thanks for any input,
Colin
