Hhhhmmhmm, whilst about all this underbonnet activity I'd also be checking the ign powered idle circuit cut off solenoid, Unscrew it from the carbi, earth the body, put power to the wire and see if the shaft moves. If not replace or as more usually done snip off the rod with the nearest set of pliers and reinstall whilst whistling happily.
enjoy
hugh

Oh yeah! You might have a clogged idle jet too. It's a small hole in the carb that might need to be cleaned.

If your car runs better with the choke out, the car is telling you your mixture is wrong. Make your air/fuel mixture richer and I think the problem with go away.
If you have a bad seal on/in the carb it will suck too much air and mess up your mixture, but try adjusting the mixture screw first.

Before you go to the trouble of taking the tank off try running a line into a gas can direct to the fuel pump. I had a similar problem and found that my fuel pump was acting up. If you take the pump off and pump the lever by hand you should get gas shooting out as you depress the lever. Mine was just trickling out as if it was a siphon.

Whenever I start My 77, It will only run If Im pumping the gas or if I have the choke just a little tiny bit out and as soon as I put the choke in it shuts off and I don't know why. Do you think it might be the carb?. my friend Thinks I might have to take off my gas tank and clean it and clean the lines and everything because it may be clogged with old fuel and dirt. If anyone has suggestions or solutions please tell me.
