Colin,

Yeah, I DO have those seals-just went out and checked this morning. No Randy, I didn't "hunt them down"...no fur-bearing mammals will be harmed in the rebuilding of The Crustycar. :) :)

Regards,
Shea :)

Colin,

I THINK there may have been new seals for the front timing covers in with the other gaskets, etc. Can't remember for sure, it was awhile ago that I sorted through that stuff.

Are EN1 covers the same? I'm concerned about timing marks, etc.

Kinda getting ahead of myself a bit, still haven't gotten bearings yet. I think I'm going to "appropriate funds" for them over the next few weeks...

Regards,
Shea :)

Hey Randy,

When you put on your new cover, did you use the old rubber seal or a new one? If oil has saturated the seal, it will swell. There is no way of fixing the seal, only replacement. If an old oil soaked seal is used with the new cover, it pushes the cover out and rubs on the pulleys, wearing a hole through.
Shea, did you get a bag of seals in the boxes of goodies I sent with the car? I am sure I sent them in with the other new parts. I think I may have a new lower cover around here that I bought for my wagon when I had it apart. I will look for it when the weather warms up a bit.

The OEM ones get chewed up to. I have a new Honda one and it has not even left the driveway yet and it has pulley slots already and the car has not even warmed up.

Thanks for the tips, Randy! :) I'll check around different parts places. About time to get off the pot and actually start SPENDING some cha-ching on the little car anyway!

Regards,
Shea :)

He Shea

That sounds nasty. Mine is in the same condition, but I have a cover. If you need a cover I would not wast too much time at the bone yard as these covers get chewed up pretty quickly by the crank pully and the water pump pully. Chances are the ones at the bone yard are going to be nasty anyway. If you want new there are a few sites around that sell this aftermarket covers, check out some of the links under parts. If you don't care then I could give you one that is already broken in.

Guys,

I have a couple of questions about timing covers, 1977 EB2 1200.

First, while (slowly) trying to prepare the engine to go back together, I've encountered some broken bolts. I attempted to extract the one located to the right side at the very bottom of the timing cover. Unfortunately, I broke off a Snap-On extractor bit in there, and no drill bits that I've tried since will touch the hardened bit now wedged in there.:( Can I attach the lower timing cover with just two bolts diagonally? That would be the lower left-hand one and the upper right hand one.

The second question-are timing covers interchangeable from EB1, EB2, EB3? When I got the car, only the upper part of the timing cover came with it (the part that covers the cam pulley). The lower part, which goes around the engine mount and down to the crank pulley is missing.:( There are a couple of 1st Gens near here in a boneyard, all in pieces, not sure what years they are. I'm hoping I might get the timing cover off of one of those, If it'll work.

Thanks much for any help you might offer.

Regards,
Shea :)
