The horsepower was different depending on the year. I think highest was the 78/79 CVCC's with 63 hp. The CVCC design was more for emissions and fuel economy. There are some performance parts out there (Cams, headers, etc.), but not to the extent of the 1200's.

I believe the power output is only 3 HP over the 1200.
(55 HP over 52 HP).

They (CVCC) make more power stock than a 1200 Civic (has 25% more displacement though), they are less upgradable and are less sought after than the 1200 Civics. Often times the Canadian non-CVCC head is highly prized to be rid of the CVCC junk.

CVCC = Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion (I think!) Basically it uses a small but rich fuel/air mixture to ignite a larger but weaker fuel/air mix. Means the system should be more efficient but avoiding the damaging 'knocking' effect usually found with weak fuel mixes. At least, that's what I've heard.

It's a US thing. Different version of the 1488cc EC engine we got (different head). Very lean running engine to cut down on emissions. We never got them (luckily). Not huge potential for performance.
