possible 2 problems.....trash in the idle circut, and possible stuck secondarys. I have had pretty goodluck with the power choke method. while accel. hard.....stuff a rag on top of the carb at the same time to force a lot of fuel thru the idle circut. I am pretty knowledgeable on the stock keihin verses the older hitachi carb. If you get the keihin just right they work great! Idle screw should be all the way in and back out 1.5-2.5 turns as a basis to start. Also, if it is a keihin, double check the secondary throttle bore "trap door". This inhibits flow at lower rpms, but uses a pendelum weight to overcome high flow air. These can get stuck........Hope it helps....Rick

k so I fiddled around with the carb today and it still won't idle. It also won't rev all the way up and it backfires thru the carb when I rev it once it is warmed up. any thoughts? I am kind of thinking a timing problem, but I am new at this so what do I know. as always any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am gonna put a DCOE on once i can afford it. I have the cannon single DCOE manifold so once i get a few more pay checks I will just switch the stock. but for now I think I am going to rebuild the stock one. I just need to find the time. Thanks for all of the help.

I say pull that stock unit and slap on a Weber 32/36 DGV. Power gains, no vacuume lines to mess with, better gas mileage, easy tune, etc...

I say re-build the carb, set the timing, and do a full tune up. Then you have narrowed things down and can look at vaccum leaks and what not. I am pretty sure the owner before me just swapped in that motor. Also, reconnect the VSS.

Let me know how things go Jeremy, take care.

Don't forget to check the "anti run on" solenoid on the carb.

This may just be a shot in the dark, but is the idle set too low? Other than that, check for vacuum leaks and fuel mixture. Was the carb ever re-built in the past?

I just got a 76 from Frito and it won't idle. I have a carb rebuild kit for it but I am wondering if there might be some other problem. The car starts fine and accelarates ok, it seems to be lacking power and when ever I take it out of gear it dies. the only way I have found that keeps it from dying is to choke it when ever I take it out of gear. Any ideas?
