Timing....stuck mechanical advance.......weak spark(coil). Do you have points or has it been converted over to electronic ignition?

so my 1200 died on the way to work like 6 months ago so i pushed it home, mostly flat and was a nice workout. Anyway I tinkered with it the next few days after and couldnt findout what the problem was. It acted like the timing belt jumped and slowly stopped creating rpms and died. So first off I checked statis and dynamic timing the best of my ability with the car not running. Nothing. I checked for spark and fuel and those were there. I got discuraged and stop trying as I was WATY to busy at the time.

So yesterday I find a few extra minutes and I drive my other car up there so i can jump the battery as it sat for half a year still connected tot he car. Thing was like I never left it. Cranked just fine under its own power but still wouldnt start. My uncle says since it starts and runs for a few seconds to try and see if the exhaust is plugged. i disconnected th header from the pipe and tried to start it. Nothing same scenerio. So I put everything bak to normal and try again. It cranks a few times, shoots a major intake backfire from the carb, as I had the filteroff so I could see the carb working, and starts up and works like it did before it deid that day 6months before.

So what do you think the problem was? I figure that the backfire was from the built up gas in the bowl from all the cranking. When it deid I was just driving mnoral to work. Not racing or beating it just driving straight for that matter.

Sorry for the book but thought you would want to know the whole story. Mike
