Does any one know where I can get a Mugen close ratio gearbox for my EN1 AND A 5.1 diff ratio

Two overdrives and no straight through?!?!?
Wierd set up. Anyone know the standards????
I know I can pull it apart and find out, but the idea here is to see if its worth it!!!

The RS ratios are
First gear 3.00 Teeth 39 - 13
Second gear 1.79 34 - 19
Third gear 1.18 26 - 22
Fourth gear .85 22 - 26
Fifth gear .71 20 - 28
Diff 4.73 71 - 15

Does anyone know the actual ratios of any of these gearboxes? Either the RS or the wagon, Accord etc boxes that have been spoken of here? I just want to know if its worth chasing anything up or just put up with what I have. It seems like RS bits are few and far between!!!!

brown1751, whats your email? Email me about the gearbox.

I am not sure of what Accord it is out of other than it is out of a gen1 Accord. The ratios are very close to the RS ratios apart from the diff ratio.

What is the number on the accord gearbox and what model accord is it out of? I am asking because I have recently installed a 79 EL 1602 with a GL gearbox from an SY accord(2nd gen) into my work car. It accelerates better and cruises at 110 a lot easier now. I also have no idea what the ratios are now.

Fair enough, you'd be using fifth at the end of the straight at Calder and definitely at Phillip Island (would love to go there some day) :).

By brown1751 (144.134.52.182) on Monday, February 09, 2004 - 04:35 am:

The RS gearbox I have is an early one.I have used this gearbox on the track and you do use 5th .My 74 civic had a EL 1602 engine in it and it would rev to 6000 in 5th at both Calder and Phillip Island.I now have an EK 1751 and the 4.7 diff is to low. So now I run the accord 5 speed with the 4.4 diff

You're less likely to use fifth on the track than anywhere else. With the ultra close ratio Mugen box I used fifth all the time ... but it was lower than standard fourth!
Never played with an Accord box but I'm 99% sure the innards are different to the Civic box. You can't just swap the diff in these boxes, the diff and output shaft go together as a pair. If the output shaft in the Accord box is different to the Civic box (pretty damn sure it is) then it won't work. Might as well just use the Civic box and if it's a 4.6 diff, chances are it's a late EN1.
There are several simple ways to tell the difference between early and late 5-speed boxes. Early boxes have a two piece end cover. There is what looks like a plate about 20mm or so thick sandwiched between the box and the end cover, later ones have a single piece end cover. Early boxes have the filler at the fifth gear end like the four speed boxes (cap that screws off but with the dip stick removed). Later ones have a filler bolt just above the right hand drive shaft.

Best offer starting about where??????

By Civic_Rocket (Civic_Rocket) (203.222.88.23) on Monday, February 09, 2004 - 02:42 am:

THanks to everyone for your help.
I think I may have found one but the guy says it has a 4.6 ( i think) diff ratio. At the moment i am running an accord gearbox that has a 4.4 diff, but I never really get to use fifth gear, even on the track. Maybe I could just use a shorter diff ratio out of his gearbox?

By brown1751 (144.134.52.19) on Monday, February 09, 2004 - 02:40 am:

I have an RS ratio gearbox in Australia. That I am willing to sell to the best offer.

I haven't spoken to him in some time (I've been stupidly busy). Last I heard he was still having some health problems so I doubt he's done a lot of car stuff recently.

In the USA the very early (1980 only) en1 boxes did come with a 4.9 ratio. The reason I leave them in the wreckers is the gear spacing is slightly worse than the standandard early sb1 trans. But if you really want to do the work, you posibly could use the EN final drive and the 75 wagon box and get a trans that has exactly the same 1-4 ratios as 73-77 1200 trans plus a fifth that is too high for performance use but nice for cruzin on the hiway.

Adrian, has the diff guy recovered? I'm still interested if a run of diffs or gear sets comes about.

By Adrian (Evocivic) (165.228.11.61) on Sunday, February 08, 2004 - 12:32 am:

As Don said, the RS is not a close ratio. It's the same first to fourth as the four speed with a fifth tacked on and a 4.7 diff as opposed to a 4.9 diff. You will not find a '78 or '79 wagon here. The 5-speed in the 1980 EN1 Civic is supposedly the same as the RS or may even have a 4.9 diff but I've never managed to get hold of one to verify this. If you can, try to find an early EN1 5-speed with the two piece end cover, pull it apart and check the ratios. Later ones with the single piece and cover are definitely taller with a 4.6 diff.
As to the chances of finding a genuine RS box here ... slim. They exist but are very few and far between.

By Don (199.2.139.206) on Saturday, February 07, 2004 - 10:22 pm:

A 75 wagon 5 sp trans in the USA is the same as an RS.
NONE of the production Honda transmissions are "close ratio". The plain old 73-77 1200 4 speed is easy to find and has a lower gear ratio (4.9)than the 75 wagon trans (4.7).

By Chris Elder (211.30.173.156) on Saturday, February 07, 2004 - 09:42 pm:

i think i heard somewhere that if u find a 78 wagon, or something... it has the same ratios as the RS? but ye ud have to double check on that.

Does any one know where I can get an RS civic close ratio gearbox in Australia? If any one knows, how much are they worth? Are the ratios a lot different to the standard gearbox? I have heard it is really just the diff ratio that is different.
