well Hot Rod magazine did a story on the one where the guy strapped a JATO bottle to his Chevy, they had pictures of the car in the air and in a barn or something like that...

Yeah, I heard about that Urban Legend too. The story keeps changing every time I hear it. The guy supposedly used a JATO (Jet Assisted Take Off) unit for the acceleration. There's a show here in the States called "Mythbusters" who took a '67 Impala out to some salt flats somewhere, strapped a rocket motor on it to see what happened. I think it topped out at about 200 mph (320 kph). Not to mention that if the car did get airborne, there's no way it had the aerodynamics to fly stably anyway. It does look fun to try though :)

Hmm.... Yes, looks like maybe a V1. These first 'flying bombs' were equipped with pulse jets and not rocket motors like the V2 as I recall.

On a lighter note, I remember reading about a guy who strapped a solid rocket booster to his Chevy Caprice, he had obtained it from the US air force who normally use them to help large aircraft get off short runways. They found what was left of him and his car in the side of a hill several miles away. At first they thought it was an aircraft wreck, doubtless the Chevy bits put them right though. Apparently they found his brakes even further away, they had exploded when he tried to use them.

From super grovers site, looks like one of those bombs that Hitler threw at the brits on the roof.
