here in vancouver you can get the Autometer Cobalt tach with shiftlite for $380 or something. Not bad for an autometer but cobalt is thier unique indiglo model. I think I'm gonna go with the sport comp set and put red bulb covers in them all. Make it kinda like special-X, Mabe even better!

im talking about a "monster tacho" (in cabin - dash mounted)
:S i wasnt thinking of getting one (i was going to opt for an in-dash tacho, but my friend was selling his for $80, and at RRP they're 500-600$, so i thought it was a good deal seeing as i needed a tachometer.

Okay, so how do you get the stock tach working with an aftermarket ignition. I swapped over to a Mallory module and an MSD Blaster Coil and you cannot connect the little blue wire to the negative lead anymore (well you can but it doesn't work)....?

Chris, there should be 4 wires running into the back of any electric tach. One is power (usually red), one is ground (usually black) one is the signal wire from the coil, and the last one is for gauge lights. It should be really easy to do, but the easiest and most factory looking way to go about this would be to find a factory tach. The connectors are already there (at least in North America), they just plug in and everything works (hopefully). Sometimes there's more wires, but these are usually for something completely unrelated to the tachometer (warning lights, turn signals, etc.)
Mechanical tachs are a little different, they attach to a cable similar to a speedometer cable, but it comes off the engine. I think the Civic RS had this kind of tach. You don't need to do any wiring with one of these, unless you want a light to be able to see the tach at night. You would need the parts to have the cable attach to the engine, though.

You can get an tachosignal of your ignition coil.

You're not talking about one of those wanky things bolted to the bonnet or just at the bottom of the windscreen on the outside are you???

If i have a Civic that was converted from Auto to 5-speed manual, and i wish to fit an exterior tachometer. What will I need to do to get this thing working?
Will I need to buy any sort of reciever / sender cable? :S is this a big job?
Is it something a household mechanic (ex oldschool electrician) person could do? or would i have to get like a trained modern-day electrician to fit it professionally to my car?
Thanks... (if u could be bothered reading that)
