small bolt on the side of the tranny holds that assembly in. take a pair of vise grips and wiggle..turn until the whole thing comes out. then you can pull the gear out the bottom.....punch the old cable out and replace it. it is tough but doable. I have had to do it once.

I tried again this weekend to change the speedo and no luck. I tried to take the cable out of a spare one I have with the gear holder still rusted on the end. I got the clip off and still no luck, anything you use will not get the cable out of the gear holder. I used a drummel tool with a cut off disc and cut a slit down both sides just below where the clip is and it still would not pull out. I put a screwdriver in and #hit it broke. It was rusted all the way to the bottom of the gear holder, there is no way to get it out unless it is drilled out from on top, but I dont want all that metal in my tranny.
I took the drummel while it was still warm and cut the jacket on the one in the car :( just deep enough to cut it in two about 10" up from the tranny in a straight section.
I greased the speedo wire and pushed it back up to the jacket and thats where I found friction putting it back in the upper section.
I think my best bet is to cut my test cable jacket in the same spot and rejoin it with a crimp sleeve.

Has anyone had this problem? Or is there a better solution.
Pssst. Dont buy cars from Ontario!

It's from a Honda manual. It's kinda crazy and cool. "How to keep your Honda Civic Accord Prelude Alive. A manual of step by step procedures for the complete IDIOT" by CISIN & PARVIN

It looks like that picture came from "How To Keep Your Honda Alive". It's a great book, filled with all sorts of those pictures.

schreck, where did you get that groovy pic of the disconnect? That's got to be one of the most artistic auto diagrams I've seen. :)

Be careful removing the bolt! If your not careful part of the assembly can fall down into the tranny. Unless your replacing the entire asssembly removing the clip is all you need

I wish it had some wiggle left. I tried the vice grip trip too. Thats when I decided to save sanity and put it in, and take the chance that the cable would be ok.

ok, the bolt holds the case into the tranny. the clip goes around the outside of the case to hold the cable in, the cable does have a problem with rusting into the case making it almost impossible to get out, I have had to pull the whole unit out to get the cable out. if you have to go that way, remove the bolt, take a pair of vice grips and latch it onto the casing, wiggle it back and forth until you get it out of the tranny, then you will have to drive the cable out. do not screw the gear up! or break the casing! Take your time doing it, if you get mad...walk away for a little bit. I have done this a few times. it can be tedious and fustrating.

There is no clip, it must have rusted away. However there is a very short bolt throught one side of the transmission that holds it in. The bolt comes out no problem.

Did you pull out the little clip that holds it in place?

Is there a trick to getting the speedo out of the transmission? When I put my five speed in last summer it had the cable already. I tried to get it out, it is stuck in the transmission. I heated the side of the case and pulled then wacked it and then gave up. I pulled the old one out of the dash and used the one on the transmission instead thinking I was smart. Now the speedometer jumps up and down between 5-10 km either way of actual speed. I pulled the cable out of the dash and poured oil down the tube and it made no difference.
Any advise?******

oh, and spray some WD40 or some kind of lubricant into the cable sleeve

By bruce (66.20.225.170) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 10:09 am:

easier to undo the speedo cluster.....you can still get the cable thru your auto parts store

ok.Thanx Jonathan. :)

Just get a new cable and fish it through. Shouldn't be too much of a problem, but depending on how easily you can get behind the dash, you may need to take the dash or speedo cluster out to get the cable attached.

What's broken, the cable, or the transmission?

Found it...Cables not connected to Transmission...Prob. Broken. Any ideas on how to fix it?

By Jonathan (66.252.173.251) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 07:32 am:

There's a cable running from the transmission, up through the firewall, and in through the back of the dash. This cable is what spins the speedometer. If both ends are hooked up, and the speedometer isn't working, you may have a broken cable.
