Move the metal clip that covers the roll pin out of the way (if it has one), get an appropriate size pin punch and a hammer and bash the roll pin out. You cannot take the universal joint on the end of the shift rod apart (well you can but it's not supposed to come apart). If the uni joint is worn out you'll need to find a new shift rod (hard to find good ones these days). At the shifter end there is a bolt that goes through the end of the rod with a couple of nylon bushes.

BTW Have you got yourself a workshop manual? There are heaps of them on ebay all the time and they are cheap (and absolutely invaluable).

PS What is with that damn flashing picture (bloody annoying and unnecessary!)

I got under my car, looked around...the shifter is connected to a rod that connects to another that goes to the gear box.At that second connection is were the "Play" is at..How do I take that apart?

It wears out, causing lots of play. They only cost a couple of dollars and take a few seconds to change.

how could the roll pin cause any problems?

What could I do to fix the problem?

By Adrian (Evocivic) (165.228.11.61) on Sunday, March 07, 2004 - 02:09 pm:

Worn shiftler linkage bushes and no doubt the roll pin that attaches the linkage to the shifter mechanism in the box (this causes most of the play). The linkage itself is probably also worn (the universal joint at the gearbox end most likely).

I have a '79 1200 , and well...when I put it in any gear, I could move the stick from side to side as if it were in neutral. It does lock into the gears but it's like if it were loose...Any help Plz. ? Thanx.
