Ok, one more thing. I think the color code might be green/blue for left turn signal, and green/yellow for right. I'm gonna have to check that again when I get home tonight.

Kurt, I think I said the thing about matching up the colors because the pair I did first had all the same color wires as the 78/79 lights. I didn't think that the all red would be a little different than the mostly red. The wiring diagram I looked at shows different colors for different sides, so maybe you'll be able to match colors for one side, and do some creative wiring on the other. Just keep in mind that on the 78/79's the green wire was for brake lights, green/blue was turn signal, red/black was for running lights, and black is for ground. Connect the wires to what you want the lights on the all red ones to do.

Thanx Jonathan. I recall connecting the wires to match up with the colours but recall it didn't work. Let me know how you make up.

Randy - I did the exact same thing!

I just took a look at the back of a '77 taillight, and if you cut the connector, you'd have 5 wires dangling free. Two green/yellow, two red/black, and one black.
If you cut the connector off a 78/79 taillight, you'll have a 5 wires as well, a red/black, a green, a green/blue, and two black. Here's what I would splice:

The two red/black from the all-red lights to the red/black on the 78/79 connector.
The black on the all red lights to the two black on the 78/79 connector
The lower green/yellow on the light to the green on the 78/79 connector
The upper green/yellow to the green/blue on the 78/79 connector

That's as long as you have dual filament bulbs in both sockets. If the wires are hooked up this way, one filament in the top bulb and the bottom bulb will come on with the headlights, the second filament in the top bulb will come on with the turn signals, and the second filament in the lower bulb will come on with the brakes. I guess you can modify the way the wires come together, so only one filament in the lower bulb comes on with the headlights, and one filament in each bulb comes on with the brakes, if you'd like a larger difference between the running lamps and brake lights. The only problem I could see coming up is if the two green/yellow wires are connected in anywhere besides at the connector. I should have some time this weekend, I'm going to install the 2/3 red, 1/3 amber lights in my car, and if they work, I'll try to put together a set of the all-reds, and test them.

Kurt, I tried last weekend too. Wont work. So I modified the all red to take the 78 sockets to snap/twist in.

Jonathan, I thought the wires were slightly different btw the all red lights and the 78-79 ones. Its been a while since I tried but I recall not being able to just splice in the 78-79 plug to the all red lights?

you can buy the clear reb light paint and just paint it... ive seen the stuff on ebay and i think at pepboys.... it may be the easyest way to go if you lights are in good condition....

US and Canadian 73-77 cars had the all-red lights. Your best bet is a wrecking yard if these cars are pretty common by you. If not, then you can get them from someone on the board. I think I have an extra set if you'd want them, but I'm going to have to do some digging in my garage to find them.

Any1 know where I could get some all red tail lights? for a '79 1200? Thanx.:)

Kurt, I don't think this is the best picture, but it somewhat shows what I mean. If I didn't wrap where I crimped with some electrical tape, it would be clearer. The 73-77 and the 78/79 lights have the same color coding for the wires, so if you cut the connectors off the 78/79 lights and crimp them on the 73-77 lights, everything should work fine. The lights I converted aren't quite all red, but the idea is the same. I'm thinking about converting one of the sets of all red lights I have just for the practice (or in case I buy another car :) ) If I get the chance to do them pretty soon, I'll post pictures of the connections before I tape them all up.

Thanx Jonathan. I noticed the wires were a little different.

Kurt, you can splice the connectors from a 78/79 on to the connectors for the all red taillights. I'll take a picture of the ones I did later tonight to show you what I mean.
Yeah, the seal arrived on Saturday.

I modified the sockets so they just screw into the back of the 77 light but it just seemed a little mickey mouse compared to using the proper 77 fixture. What do you mean by pigtails? If I get the right wiring I would just cut the wire at the back and connect the other wires.

Thanx for the wiring diagrams. Did ya get the seal yet?

Kurt, here are some wiring diagrams:
http://web.njit.edu/~jjj8778/civic/wiring/

They'll show where the wires go, and what color the wires are. Why go about the trouble of swapping the harness, though? Why not just modify the pigtails on the lights? I guess I could see it if your car was a bare shell, but isn't it almost all back together?

Just cleaning up the wiring on my car and figured I should properly wire the tail lights on my 78 to accept the all red lights. I modified the sockets but have now decided to use the proper '77 harness. I noticed the wiring is different anyone know which wire on the 78 goes to which wire on the 77 harness? Thanx.
