if by detonate you mean backfire then it is probably a distributer timing problem. I think that means that your distributer is retarded a bit to much. I think that if it is to retarded then it backfires out the tail pipe and if it is to advanced then it backfires out the intake (someone correct me if I have this backwards). I just had to deal with the same problem with my car. I ended up having to move the distributer over a whole tooth to get it to run well.
