I used to race a '73 1200 Civic. It had 250 lb/inch front springs and 175 lb/inch rear springs, all on coilovers. Front sway bar was stock and it had an aftermarket rear sway bar added (I recall it as 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter). This was a very effective and nicely balanced combination.

Any more info on the spring weights which the post was originally started about?

You can use the shock cartridges from a Mk1 Golf (very tight fit in the Honda strut cases). You could also graft some Golf strut cases onto the bottom of the Honda cases (fair bit of work) so you can use the top adjustable Koni yellows. All this has been covered MANY times before.

You can use VW Golf Koni REDS or Bilsteins, but not the Koni yellows.

I would be interested as that is pretty damn cheap compared to anything i have seen here, but I am not sure what sort of costs are gonna be involved in shipping to NZ. How much do they weigh? Mounting hardware is gonna depend on what sort of cases i end up getting....

You think more like 200lb front 120lb rear?
Didnt someone manage to squeeze them with a bit of shaving into some '75 struts? I think it is gonna be VW ones anyway cos i have never seen anything older then a '77 in the wreckers. Just found out there is more rust to be fixed than i thought so the coilovers may be on hold for a bit anyway...

Koni yellows will NOT fit into the Honda strut cases as they are fatter than the cases.
Koni yellow OD: 42mm
Civic strut ID: 39mm

that was me, they are VERY stiff, nit suggested for daily driver, have a spare set fronts and rears you can have for $100.00 AUS if you wanna try em out, think they are 65mm internal diameter.Do you need the hardware,as I can get it all here in Aus,or tell you where to get it,and all you do is ease on the threade section and weld in place.etc. Email if you want more intel.

Evening all, I am just about to get started on coilovers for my 79 hatch and i am trying to establish what springs i should be using. I will be using VW Golf Koni yellow's into either the VW struts or some '75 openables if i can track some down (not sure if they ever came to NZ but i doubt it...) I remember someone here was using 250 lb fronts and 150 lb rears which they said was a good combination, but i cant find the post so i am not sure which engine that was with. I will be using an EL 1600 so the stiffer springs on the front would make sense to go with the iron-block...
The car is going to be a daily driver and will hopefully be set up for a nice compromise between track and drag racing (if such a thing exists...)
