Most of the time you can re-use the gasket, but it's good to have an extra one on hand. you shouldn't worry about warping it, it would take some severe cranking on the nuts holding it down to crack it. You can undo the nuts holding it on, do the adjustments, and put it back.

Car noob question here. Can I just undo the valve cover and lift it off to do the valve gap adjustments, or should I buy a new gasket beforehand? Is the cover made of aluminum? should I be worried about warping it?
