Well.......let's see. Everyone agrees about the ATF besides Bruce. Makes you wonder huh!
Richard, it's worth a try to use it. It will not hurt anything, and you may find it helps. Adrian, Don, and myself have years of experience and knowledge. We would never knowingly lead you in the wrong direction.

Sorry ATF will NOT fry the honda trans. I have used ATF in mine for race use it seems to help a small amount and like Adrian said most ATF is rated at around 30W any way, it has a different additive package. The Mugen LSD doesn't care either way 30W or ATF or the expensive Honda MTL. If you had trouble in the past with a transmission using ATF it would have had trouble with the 30W too.

ok, most your transmissions run on ATF....but the first gen honda tranny uses regular motor oil. and yes....it WILL fry your tranny using it.

We used over the counter ATF in rally and touring cars for many years until some of the expensive (and unavailable to the public) special lubricants came out. I have always run my trannies on ATF either for road or competition use and it has never been a cause of failure or excess wear, "burnt out gears" is not an option, otherwise I would not have suggested it.

What about manual transmission fluid? Or is that just extra thick motor oil...

It may have had gear lube in it. Hard for us to believe, but after 30yrs of Honda transmissions using engine oil, some idiot mechanics still don't know it and put gear lube in them. Messes them up in time too. I don't know about ATF, but it might be OK as some of the others have said, Good Luck with it. The other thing is the early 1st Gen trannies tended to eat their synchros after 100,000 mi or so anyway, so it may be just wear catching up with you.

ATF will NOT burn a tranny up. I have used it in toyota trannies for 200,000+ miles with no problems. Toyota calls for 90w also. It makes them shift like "butter".

hehe.. I'm not gonna change the oil, guys.. I don't like the idea of burnt out gears over a little buzz on downshifts

ok, your all talking about putting transmission fluid in the tranny, not a good idea, it is made to use regular oil, tranny fluid has a different viscosity and will burn the tranny up.

The ATF may make a difference. You might try type F fluid because it has a friction modifier in it. It's worth a try at least.

Auto trannie fluid is approximately 30 weight oil so it'll make no significant difference.

drain the 10-30 out and put in auto trannie fluid, that will speed up the syncros and you'll have no more wear than with any other lubricant.
Works a treat!!
hugh

changed the oil completely when I did the CVs.. I put 10W30 in it. I sort of want to convert to 5 speed anyway, so I'll just run the 4 speed until it dies. In the meantime, I'll probably get a bigger stickshift for more leverage.

Worn synchros.
A change of oil may help a bit (no doubt it has the wrong grade in it at the moment).

Hey folks, the car is doing fine, I ran it around today and drove it pretty hard. I found almost everytime I went to downshift, I felt a bit of feedback in the stick from the gears. sort of a quick grind like I haven't pushed in the clutch fully. but even pressing the clutch to the floor and tightening it more, I can't solve it. Anyone know what needs to happen with this problem? Some things.. I don't know if this makes a difference... a previous owner of the car hacked off the top of the stickshift rod to make it shorter, the engine torque arm bushings are pretty bad, the shift linkage looks good. it seems like the motor purrs nicely and upshifting is nice and smooth.
