Kurt:

It's a 80 Civic that is getting the transplant actually. So based on my info, your CVCC comments would hold. This decision was based after 2 years of scouring this board! Before that I was almost ready to send my wagon to Honda Heaven (and that would have been heart wrenching). Have been trying to restore it over the last two years, but only last six months in earnest.

However, the Accord plan has almost been scrapped due to a veto from the "boss". So I have to think very carefully. Am I getting into too-much. The rest of the car needs some stripping down, weld-repair of rust patches and paint. Am well equipped to do everything, but for a lack of space.

So am in two minds now.

Thanks for all the input though. Will let you know how it proceeds.

I pulled my 1200 motor in 2 hours flat :) Course thats cutting rad hoses etc.. puting the motor in is a different story.

Is it a 1200 or CVCC car thats getting the transplant?

If its a CVCC you need little else than the motor and tranny.

If its a 1200 You need,

rad hoses
iginition set up
electric fuel pump
extend the linkage (with GK tranny)
modify torque rod
shave fly wheel or modify lower tranny mount
and whatever else I'm forgetting

For CV's we just undo the swaybar and the steering. Then you can pull down on the knuckle so the bottom of the shock slides out and pull the whole hub+cv joint out of the tranny. A nice big crowbar to gently lever the cv past the clip works a treat.

In my experience the axles slide out easily. I remove the outer end first then gave them a little tug - this pulls the inner joint about 5mm away from the transmission housing before the retaining clip does it's job. Then grab a screwdriver and (on the outside edge) lever the inner joint against the transmission casing - it'll be obvious when the clip is free. You shouldn't have to use any real force while levering.

If you don't have a drift punch or the likes, I've found that an M6 (approx.) bolt works brilliantly for driving out shift linkage pins. The initial threading collapse on the thread immediately behind and the centre of the bolt then fits tightly in the centre of the pin.

Ball-joints are a mixed bag. I usually get a crappy mix :P

We got 2 EB3's out and one back in and mostly bolted up in a weekend. The main thing to remember with the ball-joints is that if it wont come out, smack it harder. And if it still wont come out, find a bigger hammer and try again!!!

ok, maybe 2 cases of beer, and don't get the hoist till your ready to actually use it, actually hardest part of it is yanking the axles out. and driving the pin out of the shift linkage, (a nail set or drift punch works good).

Thanks.

Will plan for a two full days. Two people, one case of beer, and one old Accord. Should be fun.

Don't have a hoist, but am planning to rent one for that purpose.

plan for a one day job, you always run into snags...rusted bolts...busted knuckles (fingers) if your looking at the 4x100 swap, you got the parts. feasably if you have the hoist it should not take more than 4 hrs. to pull it.

It took me about a month to pull my engine... 10 mins here, 5 mins there a few times a week :P

I left everything attached to the engine and just unscrewed the bits from the engine bay and sat them on top of the engine. Failing that: if nothing else, remember the igniter.

Hi all:

Am planning to pull an EK1 from an 82 Accord to swap into my car. How long will it take two people (reasonably mechanically inclined and familiar with old Honda's) to pull the engine and transmission out of the car?

I have serious space issues - so this has to be well planned exercise.

What all should I pull out of the donor Accord, before I get rid of the shell?

Many thanks!
