Ah-Ha! I figured it out
When I had the hubs pressed out all but one of the outer bearings looked like above, leaving the rest of the bearing on the hub (as pictured in my first post). I just hadn't noticed one was different. If they come apart like this does that mean they are no more?
Thanks for your help Bryan

Yes.....The inner bearing race can be removed. You usually need a bearing separator and a press to acomplish the job.

Hmm... rephrase:
Can the 'inner cup' (or whatever the bit pointed to by the yellow arrow is called) be removed from both the 1st and 2nd gen civic's hub assembly? They look like they should.
Thanks for the input Bruce.

ok, what the yellow arrow is pointing at is part of the bearings, there is an inner cup that the race rolls in, and what your pointing at holds the bearing race in place, (like the bearing in the goose neck of a bicycle.) the seal is still needed also to hold the grease in.

It appears that the thing the yellow arrow is pointing to is different to its first gen counterpart. Can they be pressed off and switched?
The seal (green arrow) is no longer needed - correct?
