Angus,

I have tried to send you an E-Mail but the server at your end keeps rejecting it because it does not recognize your address. Is you E-Mail correct or do you have another service provider?

Regards

This is a question related to the initial post. Angus, do you have any figures on what the LSD will cost when you get more numbers? What is the price, for say 5? (which I reckon is realistically the upper limit of how many people will come up with the dough)

By Jonathan (66.252.173.251) on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 07:59 am:

When is the run of LSD's looking to happen? If it's a few weeks to a month or two off, I'd be in, but don't see enough slack in my budget before then. Are there only certain transmissions that it would fit, or any manual 1st/2nd gen trans? Not that I have one, but would it fit an Accord or Prelude box as well?

By Don (199.2.139.227) on Thursday, June 10, 2004 - 07:49 am:

If I had no money .. I still would use the Phantom grip blocks before I would even think about welding a diff. For the $250 Its a much better package and its work to split the cases and reseal the transmission. If you think welded diffs are helpful wait till you try even the crudy phantom slip. A few IT racers here in the USA tried the weld thing in a FWD race car. One guy broke a CV shaft in the padock just trying to turn his car :)

Come on guys, I was just giving a much cheaper alternative that definitely has its drawbacks!
But it's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying an lsd or having one made.
Sure it's ugly around the car park but I only use mine on the track and its one of the best mods I've made!!!!
No more constant understeer out of corners!
Now my little civic not only out brakes a lot of cars into corners, but puts the power down and gets out of them well too!!!!!

Well actually its two posts under yours...

I wasnt saying you did.. I was replying to the post under yours. :)

By Glenn Biscan (211.30.144.154) on Monday, June 07, 2004 - 01:55 am:

i never suggested that a welded diff solves all

infact i said that it has problems that an LSD solves

but for my application it is the correct choice

By Don (199.2.139.208) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 04:31 am:

Not worth a try unless you are racing the local dirt track. If a welded diff solves all why would we be going to all this trouble and money. Heres a hint.... it doesn't.

By Glenn Biscan (211.30.144.154) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 12:20 am:

my purple honda civic has a welded diff

but it isnt intended for going around corners

a true LSD would give similar locking ability but also allow turning @ low speeds much easyer thus LSD's are gr8 on street hondas with a fair stack of power

By Jacob (67.171.196.144) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 12:04 am:

The classic Lincoln locker. Lots of diff's around with one of those installed (usually 4X4's, but very common nonetheless).

By Civic_Rocket (Civic_Rocket) (203.222.88.23) on Saturday, June 05, 2004 - 10:41 pm:

Here's another option, just throw a couple of metal plates in the middle of your existing diff spider gears and weld it all up!!!
REALLY limited slip.
Very uncomfortable to drive around the carpark but no more understeering through Honda corner and MG corner at Phillip Island.
Turn 1 (similar to Eastern Creek turn 1) can be a little scary but it always is anyway!!!!!
Put your foot down out of any corner and the car just wants to pull you in and through the rest of the turn. Just be sure it doesn't pull you around too much!!!
Very cheap and at least worth a try instead of spending hundreds (or thousands) on an LSD.

By Don (199.2.139.153) on Wednesday, June 02, 2004 - 01:04 pm:

That was the AT engineering one..... Like I said it is better than stock but not so hot compared to other options. Very similar to the Phantom slip.

By Max (Max) (67.162.184.219) on Wednesday, June 02, 2004 - 08:40 am:

we bought one i think from don a while back.
he said it was the cheapest made one but in a straight line it would work! We haven't installed it yet but my dad bought a mill off ebay and we were thinking of reproducing some if the price was right! well it might be a while but we might have some cheap ones for sell after a while.Im not sure but im guessing in the 200-300 range!

max

p.s. dont get your hopes up, were still trying to figure out where this mill goes and how were going to move it(2500 pounds!!!)

By Don (199.2.139.159) on Wednesday, June 02, 2004 - 05:55 am:

Nope according to John the latter Mugen lsd drops in. He should know as there is one in his car. Adam Malley uses the same one in the 1200 gear box too.
No body said any thing about using the 84 bearings. I would think the 1200 bearings would be used.

By Jacob (67.171.196.144) on Tuesday, June 01, 2004 - 11:58 pm:

Don, I was of the impression that the '84 LSD would fit in the 1200 case given some minor machine work. I thought that the '84 carrier had larger outside diameter bearings, and the bearing recesses needed to be enlarged. Just trying to get my facts straight.

By Don (199.2.139.227) on Tuesday, June 01, 2004 - 10:04 pm:

No its the lsd that drops in the 1200 case.

By luckylcuiano2 (24.56.8.244) on Tuesday, June 01, 2004 - 08:03 pm:

hey don you said the 84 civic lsd will bolt right in the 1200 trani. dose the whole 84 trani bolt in?

By lazy (165.228.57.19) on Tuesday, June 01, 2004 - 07:13 am:

I would also be in for one......I have been waiting a long time as well. :)

Adrian and Angus, thanks for the help on this.

Does anyone know the conversion from AUS to USA?

I'm potentially interested, but depending on price obviously! $2500AUD is a bit over the top for my needs.

By Adrian (Evocivic) (165.228.11.61) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 05:22 pm:

Nothing makes all your suspension mods work better than putting in an LSD and there is nothing else you can possibly do to give you the pull through and out of corners that it gives. An LSD will drop seconds off your times no matter what type of racing or the like you are doing.

Before getting my LSD I used to go though turn one at Eastern Creek flat in fourth (170+ km/h) with the inside wheel spinning (those in Sydney who've driven around it will know what a fast (and potentially very scary) corner it is). It felt so much better with an LSD ... about the same speed (flat in fifth with the Mugen gearbox) but much more comfortable.

By Don (199.2.139.169) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 04:29 pm:

In autocross and road racing with the stock diff your always frying the inside tire instead of moving forward.

If you dont have this problem with an open diff your either not driving hard enough or you need to pull out your engine and send it to Bryan :)

By Kurt (207.81.105.140) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 04:05 pm:

Not to sound ignorant here but what is the overall benefit to one. I'm assuming traction?

By Glenn Biscan (211.30.144.154) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 03:54 pm:

If everyone can get a run together for a reasonable price i will also be in

but i got first pick @ angus's old LSD if he lets me

hehehe

By Zippy (Zippy) (68.85.166.249) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 08:52 am:

I am very interested in getting a quaiffe type lsd for my 1200 tranny and if the deal actually comes together at a price I can touch I'm in.

By Adrian (Evocivic) (165.228.11.61) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 06:01 am:

I'll make an effort to go to the Mini Club meeting this Friday ...

By Don (199.2.139.192) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 05:37 am:

Throw your one in with Adrian. There were a few who were waiting to hear from Adrians guy. As he has been on the board forever people know him.
Also why spend $$$$ for a one off it you cant get a run? There are two maybe more made avalible right now in the USA. The one I would recomend for you is a Mugen Lsd from an 84 Civic. It will fit in the early gear box it is stonger than the 1200 that is NLA. Price is under $1500 USD at
http://www.kingmotorsports.com
John Lemke knew of a grear bases LSD for the 84 Civic that was made too but I lots the contact info.
For the non turbo 1200s.....
http://www.opmautosports.com/products/faq.html
Is a link to a place that does a conversion to the stock diff. This is not the phantomslip :)
This one works very well for road racing and grips hard, I would suspect since its based on a modifed stock case it may not be as strong for a 200 hp standing start but you could try it and let us know (kidding!) price is $675

Adrians run was going to be around $900 USD If you get it down there then a few of us USA guys may be in as its a quality piece. Hey Adrian ask him about my gear box too! :)

By Adrian (Evocivic) (165.228.11.61) on Monday, May 31, 2004 - 12:59 am:

Dammit!! I saw Wayne yesterday and completely forgot to talk to him about LSDs GGRRR!!!!!

By Angus Button (Stu88y) (202.7.88.184) on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 11:45 pm:

Also getting a 400HP capable gearbox as well. If interested please let me know also.

By Angus Button (Stu88y) (202.7.88.184) on Sunday, May 30, 2004 - 11:33 pm:

I am currently in the process of getting a true LSD custom made for my 1975 Civic. If anyone is interested let me know and if we get a few people I will then get a price.
I am just trying to get some numbers at this stage to see what price I can get. If I just get one then it will cost me $2500 Australian. If I get more the price goes down HEAPS.

Regards
Angus
