Thanks Bryan
I made a mistake in the names its the Sycro spring that was trashed in the trannys I took apart.

I just called my local transmission supply company and he said that I could buy the whole bearing and syncro kit for a 5 speed for $150 US.
The brass rings alone would be $15 ea.
He buys them somewhere on the west coast and will call me back after they "wake up". He has the bearing and seal kits in stock and some single rings. I am trying to get more stuff.

Just looked up the parts online must have talked to a lazy parts guy. At least majestic still has them listed.

I was just going to agree with Adrian and Don- the real culprit is the synchro spring. When these go, the rest of the transmission gets thumped.
It used to be that Honda would sell the springs separatly, and for maybe $30 you could rebuild a trans. Alas, those days are gone...
The other thing to do is to match the RPMs when you change gears. If you do this well, the synchro will not have anything to do. In addition, you can change gears without the use of the clutch (I've been doing this for years in competition). This technique came in handy when the clutch cable broke in my car. I pushed the car as fast as I could, match the RPMs to get the trans into first gear, and away I went.

Its slow so I tore apart five transmissions looking for salvageable parts. From the five heres what I saw : syncro rings are usually in OK shape, the blocking rings are in bad shape! It took all five transmissions to salvage a useable set, and they are not perfect. If the face of the ring is flat its toast it should be rounded.
The rest of the syncro assembly usually gets slightly dinged up when the blocking rings go south but a die grinder can usualy remove the deformed metal.
So if anyone gets a line on new blocking rings let us know ASAP.

Two words ... double clutch.

My 3rd gear sucks too, but I never willingly grind it! I worked out that it makes no noise as long as I hold off shifting into 3rd (either up or down) when it's at or under 25 mph. If I'm in 2nd revving up and it goes over 25, I let it coast down a second before engaging 3rd. Same with 4th to 3rd, I let it coast until it's at or under 25 before I engage 3rd. If people behind me get pissed because I'm slowing down for a few seconds while I find 3rd, too bad for them! (Anyway, I'm used to 'telescoping' slow downs in front of me by touching my brake to make the light come on so the guys behind me wake up and take notice of the slow down.)

One other question all aftermarket sources for Syncros are obsolete here in the usa. I searched and called just about every trans place from here to the east. they all say yes we used to have a bunch of those but we threw them away a few years ago because of lack of demand. Honda USA only list the syncros as assemblies. At I think 200 each if I remember right. Sooo I have been buying used transmissions and using parts but they are usualy marginaly better than what I am throwing in the trash. I usually get about a year out of used parts. Its such a pain to split the cases of the transmission and its using up my supply of gaskets some have gone obsolete too
Any sources for the brass rings (blockers)??? If so I want them

All my gears are starting to grind, mostly second. you have to shift reeeeally slow to make it stop, and where's the fun in that?

I wouldn't say the syncros are necessarily 'weak'. They work perfectly when new and you can treat them quite roughly for a fair while before they die. They will of course last an awful lot longer if you are gentle on them. However when they start to go they deteriorate fairly rapidly.
Actually what you will find is that it's not only the synchro bocking rings themselves that wear out but also the springs on them. These are the little steel springs that go around the synchro rings that the synchro sleeve pushes against. When the sleeve pushes against the spring it pushes the synchro ring against the cone on the gear so the ring and gear match speed. As the springs wear out they allow the sleeve to slide onto the synchro ring easier, thus not pushing the ring as hard against the cone and so not allowing their speeds to match as quickly.

Is there a tranny that doesn't have weak sycros?
