I'd look for a lean mixture. Fire will chase the fuel into the intake if it's lean enough.

Advanced timing will not cause a backfire. If the timing is retarded, it will cause it as well as an accelerator pump not squirting.

no... you will need a timing light to adjust the ignition timing.

clamp the inductive pickup to the #1 spark plug, connect the timing light to the power source (12Vbattery)

loosen the distributor hold down bolt, and turn the distributor clockwise to retard the timing.

use the timing light to view the timing mark, and position as you retard the ignition timing by turning the distributor. (counter clockwise)

I think it might be the timing that is slightly advanced too far. Try backing off the timing 1 degree at a time, and see if that helps reduce the backfire.

Sticky intake valve perhaps? What's it look like inside? Take the top off the air cleaner and have a good look down it. Could just need a good clean.
Mine was mingin' inside. Crankcase breather sube was the problem with that.

Hi Guys/Girls... I would like to know what's happening with my carb.This is the Q...When I press the Gas pedal to Acc. sometimes it like backfires(sputters)through the carb.Then it like wants to turn off,but then I press the pedal fast to give it gas then idles normally. Any1 knows why? if so, how could I fix it. Thanks. :)
