Don't worry about changing to a cross flow head. While it may be somewhat more powerful at max levels, it is mainly convienent for keeping the intake charge cooler by keeping the exhaust away from the intake manifold and intake valve areas.
If your looking for max performance, seek out a professional cyl. head porting service; otherwise just stick with a free flowing exhaust, modified camshaft, and good carburator.

That would have been a 1488cc EC, not an EG, originally in the Civic.

My 75 Civic 4 dr came out with an EG?(1598cc).
This was a straight swap over for an EL(1602) which came out in Oz in Accords. Now the EK has been swapped over for the EL, using my original EL head and carby. There is an early and a late version of the EL and the block of the early EL has the same setup as that of the EK.
So:
75 Civic 4dr EG to early EL - straight swap
EK into an early EL setup - straight swap but using the EL head insted of anything on the EK.

I have got an EK motor that does not have a cvcc head on it. So there are no aux valves. could the cross flow head be possibly fitted now to an Australian spec 78 civic wagon

I am slowly doing the EK swap now.....I don't think you can make the head into a cross flow because of the aux. valve. best carb....depends on your preference, I am putting a weber 32/36 on mine. It is going to be a few month project, I pulled the motor out of a junkyard, the head has been totally redone and now am working on the block.

I have obtained and read the Honda Performance Handbook and read the website as well. however there is not that much usefull information that pertains to the EK motor. Here are some specific questions which can hopefully be answered.
1. I have a 77 civic wagon, i know it is a straight bolt on. But can the EK head be converted to a cross-flow head.
2. What is the best Carbeureuter for the engine
Any info would be much appreciated

Hi Tim. While I have not done the EK swap, it's a pretty common job. From what I understand it's a straight bolt in:
