SEM Vinyl dye says it will dye carpet. I don't know if I'd use it for a complete color change, or just to "freshen up" an existing color. You can probably pull some carpet out of a junkyard car and dye it to see what the finished product would look like.

I've got a 2nd gen w/ the vinyl and carpet combo door panels. Have you heard of anything that would dye the carpet areas as well? Has anyone tried dying their carpet before?
-Thanks

I used Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric spray paint. I did the panels, the rear tire well covers and the lower back set. Here's some pictures of most of it:

I want to also do the upper rear seat and front seats but they are ripped : ( so now I have to find new ones in the same pattern.

The paint works well. It does not seem like paint at all but more of a dye because it does not crack or scratch thus far. Very smooth.

I'm pretty much sold on plastikote vinyl paint.. that stuff does NOT scratch off, but you have to let it air out for a few days because it steenks real bad like.

Jeff,
Just out of interest, what sort of paint did you use to paint the panels?

By Al B (66.222.252.147) on Monday, July 05, 2004 - 09:19 pm:

Jeff,

I have an original pair of door panels in blue. They are absolutely mint. (If they haven't been damaged in the attic of my garage anyway) I'm not trying to sell you the panels, but the paint will wear off in the high traffic areas, ie: door handle area's, where your body rubs the panel when you get in etc. If you are interested, let me know on this post. thanks Al B
I will hunt them down and take pics if you're interested.

When I bought my 77 a year ago, the door panels were an ugly pinkish color and the car had tan carpet. Well, one of the first things I did (after tuneup) was buy black carpet (still near rear carpet) and black door panels and back panels. But I really wanted blue panels to match the blue gauges. Well, today I painted one of the old pink panels blue. I think it turned out well! What do you think? Once I finish all the panels, I will probably be selling a complete set of black panels if anyone is interested. Would also be willing to trade them. Not sure if the pics will show up or not...
