I used to have a sunroof in my 76 Civic. The frame was made of extruded Alum. Not like some of the tin ones that sold for about 150.00 back then. In 91 when I sold the car the seal was as good as new.
I always treated it to a soaking of G.E. spray silicone twice a year. Messy but is was worth it, it does not dry up like armour all. The Ge silicone is also great in the winter as it keeps the rubber seals from freezing to the door opening.
Don’t use it right away if you are planning on painting your car,

I just got a 79 with the pop-up kind. The seal is just fine, but now you got me worried...! If it fails, I wont ever be able to sell it here in Seattle...

Well...I personally don't like those sliding cloth ones, I don't think that that is too secure here in P.R., Especially if You want to put a music system in it.They do look nice,But these Civics here, bring up too much attention.
I'll stick with the pop-up ones.

Mine has a sunroof.. I didn't do it, it was there when I got it. No leaks though and it looks ok.

The sliding rag is a factory option, I have one from Scott's(Puff)old '76 hatch.. It was rewraped in stayfast cloth.. They are cool

I've seen a few Civics with a full sliding cloth sunroof, kinda like what was in some of the older VW Beetles. I can't say for sure that was factory, but they were kinda neat. Pretty rare option if it was a factory piece, I've only seen one on a running, driving car.

I've got a pop-up style sunrood in my Rover metro, no leaks whatsoever, in fact it's the only bit on the wretched car that seems to work! If any of yous really want a sunroof have a look on e-bay UK, there's metro parts cars coming up all the time, perhaps someone would be willing to cut the assembly out of a shell? Then all you've got to do it weld it in perhaps?

I don't reccomend the pop up sunroof at all.. too much chance for leaks that you REALLLLY don't want.. I'm having a bear of a time keeping my discontinued model sunroof that came with the car from pissing all over my new interior.. Just a bad scene.. even urethane won't keep the water out, and no one has the bits for fixing it.. so it's either fix it and cross the fingers or have a huge hole in the roof.. plus it's dinged and damaged all the sheet metal on the roof, so it's gonna be annoying to fix the body later on :P

So...Do You suggest it? Cuz' I'm planning on doing that to my Civic.

I found a rubber ring / washer from a plumbing shop that replaced it... the only problem was the nut that held the clamp on, kept coming loose with the new washer on it.
oddly enough, I came across the 20 year old pictures of when I was installing it, when I visited my dad's place last weekend.

What did You do afterwards? Did You install another sunroof?
By Ed (66.185.85.79) on Saturday, July 10, 2004 - 09:26 pm: |
I installed one in my 1976 Civic 1200, back in 1983.
I carefully measured where the dome light was.... carefully removed the headliner.... carefully drilled a hole in the roof.... carefully cut the hole out to install a pop up style sunroof.
it worked great until the rubber gasket around the clamp wore out and couldn't be replaced.
