Speakers behind back seat?

Those hacksaw blades come in real handy . I often use one to cut out areas of corrosion where other tools can't reach. I don't wrap tape round it though, makes it easier to re-install in the hacksaw afterwards!

I'm thinking of mounting some speakers up in the rear quarter panels or maybe in the bottoms of the back doors. I'm going for a period look so loudness isn't a priority for me.

It is so great to hear how you did it before I get going, this site is amazing and thanks for your help!

I guess you are talking about the aesthetic "dash lines" which is no big deal.

Nice MacGyver move with the hacksaw blade!

The dash mount is pretty easy, but you interrupt the dash lines near the steering wheel (if that even matters).. I used a hacksaw blade with tape around it as a hand tool to cut the opening and made sure not to go too far into the dash, there's a few bundles of wires in there. invest in a good name brand head unit. cut as close to the heater control panel as you can. The deck has about a 1/2" clearance on the back and all the wires and connectors just fit.. I would reccomend padding the back with a bit of stick on foam, just to stop cd skips..

On the passenger side speaker, there are wires running in the pod area, so you'll just have to push them out of the way to mount the wood.

Richard,

Thanks for the reply! Very helpful. I see you decided to go up top with the stereo deck, I am glad to see that is possible, did you have to cut any metal or move any equipment out of the way?

Is yours a 79, too?

Thanks,

Nate

I put my speakers right behind the front seats. I chose 5" circular speakers, but after all was said and done, I should have gone with 6x9's.. here's a few pics of my mountings..

Still Mid restoration, but you get the idea..

I mounted the speakers in 1/2" MDF (fiberboard plywood). Make a pattern and cut the hole for the speaker with a jigsaw. Cut the MDF so it fits behind the opening in the body. drill a few holes around the pre cut opening in the car's sheet metal.. mount the speaker to the plywood and secure the wires to the plywood.. solder the connections to the speaker. Cut the hell out of the dash and mount the din cage. wire the deck up and slide it into the cage. play music loud and drive fast :)

The current system can be deafeningly loud if needs be, and it beats putting pods in the footwell area. make sure everything in the car is tight (Especially the license plate) before you do this.. it causes mad rattling. I'm considering a subwoofer, but I may just cut my losses and get a nice set of 6x9 speakers and coming up with a creative way to mount the 5" speakers.. Stereo installation is fun, but do lots of research before hand. :)

I know that some people put speakers in the side pockets in the backseat area of 1st Gens (just missed my chance on inserts on Ebay!), but has anyone had success putting them in the "way back" (as we used to call it as kids)? If anyone has an idea of how to do this, I would appreciate your tips! I just got my first civic last week. Also, if anyone else is in the Seattle area, I would love to know what some of the good local places for parts/expertise are.

Thanks!
