thanks everyone, i am headed into the dreaded heat of LA to locate the black box. the itty bitty bulb was in a tiny box with a soldered wire which was pulled out, so i have to have it resoldered (my brother).
i have been doing the jiggling thing for the time I have had the car and its all jiggled out!
ill update later. thanks!

I've just had a look in one of my parts books, it's not strictly for CVCC, but the indicator bulb is part number 37710-580-000. It's the same parts number all the way back to 1973 by the look of it.

I haven't actually looked at the dead bulb in my Hondamatic yet but if it's real small I might try looking for one at the local Radio-Shack type store. Have you tried jiggling it though? (Don't laugh! ) Mine did fire up when I'd done that once so it might just be a dodgy connection?

hehe I had this problem.. turned out to be a rotten fuse in the black passenger side fuse box. If your fuse box is labelled, it should be a 15A fuse, the third or fouth fuse up from the bottom. This fuse also controls the rear taillights and marker lights, so check if those are out, too. The fuse didn't look blown, so I pulled it out and checked it with a meter. tere was no continuity at all and when I held the fuse the other way, the metal cap popped off.

There's also a fuse right behind the dimmer switch (1A fuse, I think), if that fuse goes, the dash lights would cut out on you too. You can get at that fuse by looking under the dash, right near the dimmer. Should be in a plastic holder.
Can't help you on the bulb, but have you tried a dealership? They may be able to get them still. I don't think I've ever seen a smaller bulb.

the fuse is in the fuse box, someplace...and I got one of those lights here, check the connections for your shifter light, my ground kept breaking on it. on my 78, if my dash lights go out, so does my headlights. and depending on what fuse box you have, it is either the top or bottom fuse.

hi folks
i saw a thread about this that ended in ugliness,
so i was hoping you could help me without getting mad. where is the fuse that lights the dash up in a 79 cvcc?
it died tonight. AND does anybody have the super itty bitty bulb that goes in the shifter console in an automatic? mine is dead and i would love it if it lit up.
i love my car!
