I didn't know why my update post don't show up - I had it posted over an hour ago, explaining what's going on my civic today.

In sum, my civic did got started with very little problem - I'm surprised that its engine did quite well after all the time since. It was meant only to see how it runs and find out what it needs in greater details. Manual and some new parts to come soon.

All in all, I'm off to a good start in planning steps in getting the engine cleaned up and tuned up. That kind of engine I can handle with relative ease. I've been working on V8s for years.

I would clean out the carb. There will be lots of gunk inside that will give you nothing but hassle. Do the basics, If it was running when it was put away, it shouldn't be too hard to get it going.

Don't bother dropping the tank.. just siphon it out with a good siphon ( the one with the squeeze pump at the end usually works great). You should probably add a bit of new gas before you start siphoning in case the level is extremely low. Check the CV boots for holes, and replace those while doing the wheel bearings. Likely you'll have to replace the calipers, bearings, pads and rotors on the front. Often the wheel cylinders on the back start to leak too. Replace an old brake lines if they're available then purge the brake system and refill it. Drain and renew all the engine fluids and replace the battery. check for rad leaks. change all the fuses to be sure you have a good electrical pathway. Replace the cap rotor and plugs. replace the thermostat at the joint of the upper rad hose to the engine when you drain the coolant. remember to open the air breather on the intake manifold when filling the cooling system. Get a Haynes Manual and a Honda Maual off amazon and get a good set of metric tools. I'd seriously reccommend some new rubber for the honda too.. just go to walmart once the car's running and have them do all four tires and get a balance done on them.. costs about $200.. If you replace either CV joint or wheel bearing, get your wheels aligned to stop shuddering and wheel wear at high speed.

Hello all,

Just got a '76 Civic 1200 with 4 spd and I may need your help in getting the engine started up and to get the car back on road.

I know that it will require having gas tank taken off for draining out old stuff then clean up for re-install back. Likely most or all rubber hoses would be replaced. Fuilds too to replace...

The purpose is to see if the engine will turn over and to check for any problems. I only need it to run for short time to move car around and to be able moving up a big ramp into the shope where I work. Ramp is uphill, so pushing isn't fun!

Once I have it inside, I'll give it a complete tune-up and brakes checked before I put it on road for real. Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks! The civic hasn't been used for many years!
