I woner what it would cost to have some made out of stainless or aluminium?

Yeah, no grommets is exactly what happened to us. Somebody tore them off before we got the car...

Even with those rubber washers they tend to warp over time, due probably to heat.

It's not a good idea to leave the bottom cover off as it will expose the belt and tensioner to water, dirt etc. Plus the cover also has the timing mark on it. A twisted and worn cover is better than no cover. The top cover isn't quite as important but still not a bad idea to have it on.

The pulleys eat the cover usually because someone neglected to put the two "o" ring type grommets back on the adjuster bolts as equipped from the factory, which hold the center of the covers flatter and keep them fron contacting the pulleys. I have said it before and will say it once again, If Honda puts a part on a car, there is a reason for it. Of course none of us can control what some cobbler has done (or not done) to our cars before we gained ownership of them.

Won't leaving it off drastically reduce the life of the timing belt?

I could swear I found another post about this, can't find it any more though. The big problem with her cover is the crankshaft pulley has eaten it up.

I don't think you'll find the cover as a new part, the wrecker is your best bet.... but by now they all tend to be warped and crappy and rubbing on the water pump pulley. You can always leave it off altogether.

I know they have gaskets. But I couldnt find the actual covers. I know there are a few good ones on the junk Hondas at the yard. Maybe 5-10$.

Will Honda or part stores still carry plastic timing belt covers for 1200's? My friend's is badly cracked, oil and dirt is getting in. Gaskets are all toast too.
