The spare is located under the rear of the wagon (like a pick up truck) the jack is on a special bracket on the floor in front of the passenger. It has a big fat rubber band with metal clips on each end and a vinyl cover.

There's an old thread "How do I lower my 1st gen wagon" (May 2003) with a pretty good illustration of the axle/spring.
I don't know how to link the thread... but I found it by using the Key Word search.
