yep. that's me take that advance unit off and suck on the pipe.. if it moves, the problem is probably at the carb manifold. otherwise there's probably a rust hole or something inside the advance actuator..

Hey Chaffneue,
Yeah, always good to know there's somebody else in town! Your crummy green thing, it wasn't parked at Hillside mall last evening, was it? Got an HTO sticker on there?
We'll have to check out the advance unit, but the hose is in fine shape. My girlfriends dad who is a mechanic said it appeared to be toast, since it had a vacuum leak with a new hose and everything. I'll take it off and have a good look at it soon. I'm going to keep looking for a better price for a new vacuum advance too...

Kewl, man.. nice to see a local on here.. You might see me driving around in my crummy green thing.. See ya on the road, mang.. One of these days us vic guys should meet up and swap stories.. Gorge auto is usually the cheapest for honda parts and I don't know many wrecking yards who have the cars sitting around. $70 for an advance unit ain't all that bad.. are you sure it's the advance unit and not a crack in the vacuum lines or line standoffs?

So my girlfriend's dad (a mechanic) took a look at the Civic last weekend. Got out the timing light, set that properly. It was 5 degrees out. He also hooked up this Snap-On analyzer. It's pretty sweet. Tells you how much work each cylinder is doing, checks out the coil, wires, all that. Did a compression check, everything looks good. Set the idle and mixture properly.
We set the timing to exactly where it's supposed to be, but it actually sounded a little smoother slightly advanced. Anybody else find this? Vacuum advance still busted, I'm looking for a new one. Gorge Auto wanted $70... not paying that. I've still got to call a few more places in town.

Hey Don,
We have looked for the screws a few times. I personally didn't rebuild the carb, my friend did. We've checked out the diagram a few times, and can only find one screw.
We didn't take it to anybody because we don't really have the money to do that and we'd like to learn more about cars. We figured asking around on the board when we couldn't solve the problem ourselves would be a good way to do it.
Jarcaf, thanks for the info. I'll check it out tomorrow. So the vacuum advance shouldn't actually be letting any air through it?

I had to replace my vacuum advance on my 82 civic cause it leaked like that. You can take the advance off and suck on the little tube that the vacuum line attaches to and see if the other end moves. It was like a 15 minute swap on mine, no problems.

I hate to say it but if you cant find the screws how did you expect to rebuild the carb and expect it to be a good job. Best advise is seriously take the car to an experienced mechanic or take some auto classes at your local college.

We recently rebuilt my friends Keihin carb on her '77 1200. There was a vacuum tube missing from the start. You can hear the carb sucking air when the tube is off. When we plug the hole on the carb, it seems to run more smoothly. We replaced the tube (between the carb and the vacuum advance on the distributor) and it still seems to run a little choppy. There are other problem with the engine... but when you squeeze the tube to cut off airflow, the engine idles more smoothly. Is the vacuum advance supposed to leak like that? Can it and should it be replaced?
Another question about the Keihin: manual says to adjust idle and mixture screws. We can only find one screw! Where is the other?
