I tried to post a reply yesterday, but I guess there was a problem w/ my computer. Anyway, I don't have my EK in a Civic. It was in a '79 Accord that I built up, but the car is gone now so I only have the engine in storage. My current project is an '81 Prelude convertible made by a German company named Tropic (now out of business). I will use the car more for show than for go as it is pretty unique. That's why I am considering a H22 conversion although I know it will be very expensive. However, I think it would be interesting to have a 5th gen engine in a 1st gen car.

I don't know which Generation Civic you have the motor in, but with the changes I mentioned your 1751 would be pulling an easy 100+HP and still be smooth and extremely tractable. That motor puts out a lot of torque and with the right gearing you can set up your car to be either quick. or a quiet "cruisemobile" on the highway. With all the rush to put the newer motors in our older cars...I am tempted too...the reality is you can't use all that extra horsepower on a daily basis without running the risk of losing your license and making some lawyers richer than they are already. You know most of our driving involves how fast you can get to the next stoplight. I guess all I am saying is you might find that what you have is fast enough already. Dennis Singley if you are reading this what do you think about it since your setup is very similar?

I know that A/T Engineering is gone. I wasn't surprised because my experience with Serge was less than satisfactory. I know I could probably do things to the EK to make it better, but at this point I'm not sure it is worth it when there are other engine options available.

By John S. (66.143.34.121) on Thursday, November 11, 2004 - 09:01 pm:

First off A/T doesn't exist anymore. Too bad too because Serge worked his ass off to keep it all together. It was the recession of the late 80's and early 90's that too them out. Then too Honda didn't help with some of the carburated motors they where putting out back then. One of the reasons there are so many hot parts available for the newer cars is ,believe it or not, they are easier, i.e. more adaptable than the earlier stuff. That is not including the really early stuff EB's and EC-EK's. I think that your biggest problem on the hot EK motor is the cam is way too hot for a "smooth idle". Probably got terrible gas mileage too ,didn't it. You would have a good setup just by putting a milder cam in the head, and a downdraft DGEV Weber on it, that is assuming the work was all done well, and you have taken pains to store it properly.
What is it all worth? Totally depends on the buyer.

Anyone have any idea what my setup might be worth?

By greg tingler (Tropic81) (141.153.93.43) on Wednesday, September 15, 2004 - 06:52 am:

AT Engineering doesn't have anything for the EK1 anymore as far as I know. I bought the parts some time ago and then I quit driving the car b/c I bought a CRX Si. That's why the engine doesn't have many miles on it, but it also hasn't been started in awhile. Anyway, the engine pulled like crazy w/ the mods I made, but you could tell it was starving for more fuel. If anyone is interest in the engine drop me an email and we can discuss terms of a sale.

sick setup????? is that good or bad...I been slowly building up a 1751....but friend blew his head gasket on his stroked 1600 so I been helping him..we went to a pull-a-part and picked him up a 5 speed tranny, planning to go back over there and pull the other 2 1751's and another 5 spd. 10 hr drive is not bad......I go down to Atlanta quite a bit so.....just let me know

AT doesn't still make those parts i assume(esp. flywheel)? What companies make oversize pistons anymore? I assume honda, but anyone else?

Bruce do you really want a hot engine, Ive got a sick set up you might be interested in and you where I am in TN, we can do the LBL trip again.

I'm thinking you are at least 10 hours away, but if you are interested in the engine I'll probably sell it.

I live in southern Illinois........just a hop skip and jump away

Drive over from where?

By bruce (66.20.225.163) on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 - 12:18 pm:

I can just drive over and pick it up......maybe try a weber setup on it.

By Kyle Thomson (24.83.12.187) on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 - 11:15 am:

Shoot me an email if your serious about selling it, shipping would be a fortune, but if the price is right I'd be interested

Stock carb!! Some dual carbs on that thing would really wake it up. Where you located?

I'm in West Virginia. If I could find a dual carb set up I'd buy it in a minute, but I haven't been able to find one. The only use I could possibly have for the engine is for an '81 Prelude convertible that I have. However, I think I'd like to try an H22 conversion instead of using the EK1 so I probably would be interested in getting rid of it.

Thats a pretty sweet set-up, I'm not sure If anyone here has anything that extensive. I think we have a few people with the EK/EL swap done or in progress with pretty good results. Let me know if your not going to use it, I know of an engine bay that would love to have it =)

By greg tingler (Tropic81) (141.153.93.43) on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 - 08:02 am:

I have a '79 EK1 w/ the following mods:

AT Engineering EL head:
-- 1mm oversize valves
-- silicon bronze valve guides
-- stiffer springs (although i'm not sure how much)
-- shaved .30
-- port matched
-- .420 lift 296 degree cam

Pacesetter header flowing into dual exhaust

Block
-- surfaced
-- bored over .30
-- pistons and rods from AT Engineering
-- chrome-moly rings

Lightened flyweel (AT Engineering)

Stock carb, distributor and ignition

Just curious if anyone has a similar set up and what kind of power that set up generates. I'm also curious as to what kind of potential this engine has and how that potential can be reached. I seriously doubt I will ever use the engine again, it only has 3g miles on it, but I might reconsider if I could find additional parts and a way to make it run a little smoother.

Thanks.
