the bore is the same and all the bearing etc on the bottom end are the same. i got a top end rebuild kit of ebay for an EK to use on my EL and all the gaskets/valve seals look the same as the EL

just wondering,
are the rebuild kits for a united states ek1 1800cc motor which, has the cvcc head interchangeable with the el 1600cc prelude motor.
took all the advice. no more blue as before. cleaned out the gas tank as well. didn't change the valve seals yet. would like the above question addressed first. thanks guys.
i wish i could figure how to post pics on this board. tried and i can't figure it out. argh!!!

guys,
thank you for all the replies. all the suggestions will be noted and I will try them all. It's good to hear that rebuilding the motor can be done without having to pull out the motor.

EL head = no aux. valves

You can replace the valve guide seals w/out even removing the head, and those can often be a problem for oil leakage. The Auxiliary valve o-rings are a possible culprit as well, and can easily be replaced. If you want to avoid a rebuild, you might want to try these first. If it doesn't solve the problem, then it's not really a waste of money, since you've got to replace them in a rebuild anyway.

Hey Elv,
When I had the motor it didn't blow much blue. Only time is when I was hard on it, it did a bit. And that's when I was hard on it. When we go it cranked over with the timing a little off it still didn't blow that much blue, even when justin drove it around the parking lot I didn't notice anything like that.
Did you install the new carb in there already? I'm wondering if you have the wrong jet installed for the application and you runing way to rich? Or if it the seals in the carb are a bit dry and dumping fuel in? Did you change the oil and dump in a can of engine restore to see if that helps?
My point is check out the easy stuff and see if you find the problem cause I know the motor shouldn't smoke like crazy , not blue at least.
But if you just want a new motor and this is the perfect excuse for Jen, by all means...the motor is shot.... hehehe

just a thought....why not do it yourself....really not that hard..it is easier to do a rebuild than trying to figure out a mystery problem. all the parts are still available. If you think it is just the rings those can be done without pulling the motor. A whole rebuild set, (rings, bearings, gaskets) runs around $300 to $350. take the head to a shop and have them clean it and make sure it is level. ($20 to $40) buy a cylinder honer. and jump in. best way to learn.

so i started up my car. justin and wilson helped install and make it crank over and idle. problem is is that it shooting out so much blue smoke. it's quite embarassing.
wilson, built up the motor with a racing cam and i sourced out a better down draft carb. priced out some places. lowest price for a remanufactured 82 1600 EL is $1300 just for the motor.
i'm thinking for that price, i might as well just go all out and get justin to source out and install a civic ef or eg motor into the car. can't stop now and give up as i spent way too much on this car. what should i do? justin/twyla, kurt, anyone???? thanks. this board is excellent.
