First year of my mechanics apprenticeship. I've been waiting 6 years to find a shop to send me, it feels a little wierd being back in school.

Andrew, wednesday should be fine, I'll give you a call

If there is extras scoop one for me. Mine has a slight crack at the base. What course you taking Kyle?

i'd say friday is probably not good for me, my car won't have an engine then :) i get friday off instead of thursday and since they probably won't be open on thursday it will ahve to be teus. or wed. this week.

By Kyle Thomson (24.83.12.187) on Monday, November 08, 2004 - 02:18 pm:

Well I found out today that my classes only run till 2:30 yay! and I get every second friday off yay! and since thursday is a holiday, I get a 4 day weekend, double yay! =) so would friday work for you? I could meet you when you're off work

By -Andrew Smit- (Cvcc_Wagon) (154.20.95.104) on Sunday, November 07, 2004 - 03:51 pm:

well t hat timing might work fine, i fond out about them when i was at Kirshaw performance engines to pick up my head and the guy from K&G (i'm sure that is the name now) had seen my head and thought the header might fit it so i went over there right after. i was there at about 5:15 on a week day so they are open a little later looks like so i'll give you a call this week some time and we'll see what works. i work in surrey by 152 and 64th and i get off at 4:30 so maybe we can arrange to leave from there or something like that. my cell is 604 617 9737

By Kyle Thomson (24.83.12.187) on Sunday, November 07, 2004 - 02:54 pm:

Hey andrew that would be great if it comes down to that, but by the sounds of it I can use my original flywheel which I already had shaved. So I would prefer to use it if I can.
I would love to see the headers you found, I think I figured out where they are. I looked it up online and K&G auto recycling is right where you described. I wouldn't mind going with you, but I don't know if my schedule will work. I'm starting school on monday and I think my classes go to 3:30? If they are open next saturday I would be down on going. Give me a call at 604-438-5796 (in burnaby) and we can see what works

By -Andrew Smit- (Cvcc_Wagon) (154.20.95.104) on Sunday, November 07, 2004 - 12:50 pm:

kyle. i have the flywheel off my 83 EM1 if it is of any use to you, it is quite a bit different then the EL flywheel and has the smaller input shaft size for the civic tranny. give me a shout about that header too, maybe we can go there together as jarcoff wants one of them too, i may puck up one for him and send it to him.
where do you live again?

By Kyle Thomson (24.83.12.187) on Sunday, November 07, 2004 - 12:33 pm:

Beauty, thats what I needed to hear. I hope that when you say 1200 flywheel you meant cvcc's as well as I thought they were the same. Anyways I'm going to try it and see what happens, its only 50 bucks and its already out of the car, so it'll make life easier

By Kurt (205.250.75.226) on Sunday, November 07, 2004 - 12:11 pm:

For the EN tranny I believe you will use the EN flywheel or the 1200 flywheel. The EL flywheel is completely different.

I think the 82 Civic tranny is just slightly lower gearing than the Accord 5 speed (GK) tranny. The 80 Civic 5 speed has a 4.93 final drive and from what I understand its the same gearing as your 4 speed but with an extra gear for the highway.

The '80 5 speed is the one I am tempted to try for more pull out of the hole. I'm worried about traction though as I seem to have a good balance now. I once spoke to someone on the board that tried the '80 5 speed with the EL and he said the gearing was just too low for the motor. As it is now traction is impossible in the rain and I can already spin them well into 2nd on dry ground :)

Just use your original clutch, flywheel, pressure plate etc. The tranny just bolts straight on

Anyone know any specs on a GN tranny? I found one locally that is already pulled and cheap but I don't want to waste any more money buying the wrong parts. I did a search and all I could find was that its out of a 82 civic. It looks like people have bolted it up to a 1200 but I can't find what they used for a clutch/flywheel/pressure plate?

I also wouldn't mind knowing what kind of gearing it has if anyone has that info.

sorry to just jump in on this thread and throw questions around but i started a new thread and haven't gotten many responses. does anyone know if i can drop a 77 accord cvcc 5-speed in my 79 civic cvcc wagon? and if i can, what mods will need to be made to which parts?

By Kurt (205.250.75.226) on Wednesday, November 03, 2004 - 07:20 pm:

Kyle,

I'm not sure if you could use the flywheel/clutch that came with it. But, I'm willing to bet the spacing on your flywheel will accept the Accord clutch.

You guys that have swapped your CVCC 4 speeds to 5 speeds know?

By Kyle Thomson (24.83.12.187) on Tuesday, November 02, 2004 - 10:42 pm:

See the problem is I don't have the early EL flywheel to do that with. I used the stock 79 cvcc flywheel and had it machined to use accept the accord crank, I'll take pics tomorrow if I can remeber to bring the 12 point socket home. I may have found a lead on a 73-79 5spd that would save me a LOT of trouble.
If I went with an '80 Civic 5 speed tranny would I be able to just bolt it up using the flywheel/clutch that came with it? or do I have to start mixing and matching parts again?

By Kurt (205.250.75.226) on Tuesday, November 02, 2004 - 09:07 pm:

Kyle,

My motor is the 81 EL and I went with the later 82-83 5 speed GK tranny as it has the cable clutch as opposed to the hydraulic one.

Everything bolts to the block perfectly and the 81 starter is also used as well as the EB clutch and speedo cables.

Like Glen, I used the 81 EL flywheel but bought a clutch kit (and throw out bearing) for the 82-83 tranny as I beleive the throw out bearing is different btw the cable and hydraulic trannys. Bolted up fine and works perfect.

You will want to turn down the back side of the flywheel to avoid clearance issues with the cross member mount otherwise you have to modify the cross member mount. The flywheel is fairly heavy anyway so its probably worth having done.

Buy your clutch from Napa instead of Lordco as there is about an $80 price difference. Better yet ask for a NK615 clutch kit. $160.29 after tax.

Have you thought about a Civic 5 speed? I am tempted to track down an '80 Civic 5 speed tranny for the lower gear ratios but wonder what difference it would really make.

i believe the flywheel bolt size is different on the early models, on my 82/83 EL crank the bolt holes are 12mm i and i think the earlier ones are 10mm. they are on the same center so basically the bolts are sitting in a hole that is too large. there is an alignment pin that keeps it from spinning but it's probably not good idea to use that flywheel, i would look into using the early flywheel with the later tranny. that said i have that flywheel and tranny on my EM1 right now and haven't experienced any problems yet but it's just temp till i get my EK/EL motor finished. and it's almost there :)
hope this helps.

oh, and if you feel like taking on a project, i have the 5 speed from my EM1 which is missing 5th gear and the bearings around the CV input holes are completely shot but it's removed and all yours if you want to do the rebuild :)

By Kyle Thomson (24.83.12.187) on Monday, November 01, 2004 - 11:53 pm:

Thats great news! now did you use the 79 clutch/pressure plate because you had to? or because it was there? the reason I'm asking is I am currently running my EL with the original 4spd from my civic, modified flywheel, and I think a 2nd gen civic clutch. I don't think I can use any of that stuff because the input shafts have a different spline count, so I was hoping I could just use all the stuff from the donor tranny. But I'm curious as to why you used the original parts?

By glen (203.109.250.66) on Monday, November 01, 2004 - 10:12 pm:

Kyle
I have a 79 EL with the later model accord gearbox with the cable clutch. I used the 79 clutch and pressure plate and the later model throwout bearing. The bearing was attached to the input shaft a different way than the 79 gearbox.
Other than that, everything else bolted up ok.

Has anyone ever swapped an 82-23 accord 5 speed tranny on to an 79-81 accord motor? are the mounting holes the same? assuming you use the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate that came with the tranny, will the flywheel bolt to the crank without any mods?
