Hey guys thanks for all the opinions and help! sorry I haven't been posting I was out of town for a long time. Anyhow I took off the mid engine motor mount right in the center and tryed but the noise was still there. what is the bush on the motor mount? the rubber piece?

sdcvcc: I also think that my sound is coming from behind the oil pan... did you figure yours out?

I took the belt off the alternator and tryed running it like that but I still got the noise so I don't think it's coolent on the belt...

If it was a bad berring wouldn't the sound just get worse the higher the RPMs?

I checked the valves and respaced them a few months ago but I'll try again it may be possible that I didn't tighten a screw.

Thanks to all!

are your valves adjusted? those will make a hell of a noise if they're wrong. is your oil pressure idiot light coming on? it could be the oil pump seized and snapped the pin or arm that drive it and now it's whacking the inside of the motor.

hey all this talk about bearings my civic is making a knocking sound snd its as simple as a worn bush on one of my engine mounts, its probably not ur prob i just told ya coz its happenin to me now, it might be one of them things that when u find it u will slap urself but who knows just a suggestion

If you get coolent on your alternator drive belt it can sound like a bearing knock. If the waterpump is seeping onto the belt it can cause the same thing. If you have an actual rod or main bearing knock you will know it. These cars will not run long with a bad bearing in them. That aside high mileage motors tend to have a little rodbearing chatter when you give them a quick rev, or oftentimes on cold startup. This can also be piston slap which usually goes away after the motor is warmed up.

my 75 started doing that. I narrowed the sound down to the bottom of the engine. distinct at the oil pan.
try listening down there.

Sounds a bit like a big end bearing, though with these things it's always very hard to tell without hearing them and even then noises in engines can be very deceptive.

BTW the water pump and pulleys are on the left, not the right (you think about it as though you are facing the same direction as the car, not facing towards the car.)

I recently have begun hearing a really horrid knocking sound coming from somewhere in the engine. It is very difficult to narrow down where it is coming from which makes me a bit more fearful, but I feel like after holding my ear against different parts of the car the sound may be coming from the right side (pulley side). I took off the water pump, thinkning that it might be a bad berring, but it was in really good condition. I don't know that much about deep engine mechanics but would it be possible that the crankshaft (berring) would be making the noise. It sounds kinda like someone knocking a wrench against the air filter, the noise is not constant, it comes and goes. At very low RPM the noise disappears but as it revs up it gets loud but then starts to blend in with other engine noises once the RPM's get around 3500. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Brandon
