alright.. I got it sorted out.. yeesh.. I checked the bulbs.. all were still good. I seperated the harness connector and sat down with the haynes and tested the lights. if I jumpered the flasher to the corresponding signal side, they worked.. so it had to be the switch.
I pulled the switch off and there was this sick earwax grease in there, which apparently set fire when I went to signal.. I guess it must have sparked a bit.. I took it all apart and here's what I found after I cleaned it all out
/image{burnt area}
a little burnt spot which had marred the plastic so the switch couldn't connect. I used a tiny file to flatten it and put new grease in the system. then I just put it all back.. voila.. blinkers are back.

ahh.. yeah good point.. I can just disconnect the harness and test it.. man you never think of this stuff when you're panicked.. I'll check the bulbs too...

Richard, check your bulbs. There might be enough load on the flasher relay to work the hazard lights, but not enough with only one taillight out. You can check the switch with the help of a wiring diagram, the connector is easy enough to get to under the dash, just pull it out and spend some time with an ohmmeter, making sure there isn't a connection where there shouldn't be, and there is where there should. If you do wind up needing one, I think I have one or two spares too.

Hey folks.. I've run into some trouble with my turn signals (1977 1200 EB2 hb).. They were working yesterday. Today I tried to start the car and the starter wouldn't turn over. I opened the hood, noticed the battery negative terminal had a large crack in it and it was loose on the battery. I purchased a 4ga ground strap and grounded the battery to the rad like normal.. Started the car and everything seemed fine, but halfway down the driveway as I signalled to turn left, a little bit of smoke came out of the turn signal switch :P I turned the car around and parked it and then started to try and find the fault. After checking the fuses (none of them were open) I started the car again and tried the signals again .. the left signal works fine now, but the right signals are not doing anything, no click, no indication on the dash and no flashing lights outside. The hazard lights work fine and the dash indicators are showing. So I'm guessing it's the switch.. but why would it burn out if the hazard lights are still fine? This may turn into a want to buy turn signal switch assy post :P. Is there a weak point in the signal electrics that I can look for?
